Gordon W. Otto
Gordon W. Otto, age 77, of Winsted died Monday, March 20, 2006 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.
He was born Jan. 30, 1929 in Redwood Falls, the son of William W. and Elsie I. Voeltz Otto. Gordon was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Redwood Falls April 14, 1929 by Pastor W. C. Nickels; and confirmed in his faith at that same church May 30, 1943 by Pastor E. A. Birkholtz.
In 1949, Gordon graduated from Redwood Falls High School. He later attended watchmaking school in Elgin, Ill.
Gordon was joined in holy marriage with Lorene A. Richert Sept. 3, 1950, at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Marshall. God blessed their marriage with three daughters: Janet, Kathleen, and Patricia.
Gordon owned and operated Otto’s Jewelry Store in Winsted from 1956 until 1983. He was also a former rural mail carrier for the Howard Lake post office.
A faithful member of St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake, Gordon also held many church positions through the years at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winsted.
He helped found Winsted Ducks Unlimited, was a past Winsted City Council member, belonged to the Winsted C & C, the Sportsman’s Club, and the Crow River Coin & Stamp Club.
Gordon is survived by his loving wife, Lorene A. Otto; daughters Janet (Raymond) Cardinal of Waverly, Kathleen (Allan) Uecker, and Patricia (Aaron) Kubasch, all of Winsted; grandchildren Jeremy (Chris) Cardinal, John (Kristy) Cardinal, and Jesse Cardinal, Alyssa (Chad) Meger and Michael Uecker, and Amanda and Brooke Kubasch; great-grandchildren Austin Uecker and Anastasia Cardinal; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Mary Otto of Homer, Alaska; Doris (Verlin) Dahmes of Alexandria, and Martin Richert of New Hope; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William W. and Elsie I. Otto, a brother, Donald Otto; and a sister-in-law, Josephine Richert.
Funeral services were Thursday, March 23 at 11 a.m. at St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake with the Revs. Michael Nirva and Martin T. Schoenfeld officiating. Nancy Butterfass was the organist, and “How Great Thou Art” and “Abide with Me” were sung as congregational hymns. Soloist was Aaron Kubasch. Interment followed at Winsted Public Cemetery.
A visitation took place Wednesday, March 22 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.
Honorary casket bearers were Alyssa Meger, Amanda Kubasch, Brooke Kubasch, Chris Cardinal, and Kristy Cardinal.
Casket bearers were Chad Meger, Michael Uecker, and Jeremy, John, and Jesse Cardinal.
The Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted served the family.
