Levi Edwin Rost
Levi Edwin Rost, age 97, of Cokato, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2006 at the Buffalo Hospital.
He was born May 24, 1909 on his parent’s farm north of Kerkhoven, Minn. His father, Frank, moved to Minnesota in 1890, with his mother and brother, from Courtland, Kans. His mother, Anna Marie (Rhom) Rost, married Frank in 1905.
Levi completed the eighth grade at District 86 School in Swift County, and then went to work on the family farm.
The family moved to Cokato in February of 1927, joining Levi’s brother, Arnold, who was already living there. Levi worked that spring on the building of the school auditorium. He also worked for Green Giant in Le Sueur, Winsted, and Cokato, canning peas and corn for two or three seasons.
He then went to work for Milo Gilmer at his service station on the northwest corner of US Hwy 12 and Co Rd 3. In 1937, Levi leased the station from Milo, but after one year, Milo returned to work at the station.
In 1938, Levi rented a service station east on Hwy 12, where he sold Texaco products. In the early 1950s, he purchased the gas station, that later became known as Rost Texaco. Levi operated this station until his retirement in 1976, at age 67.
Levi was united in marriage to Genevieve Holt in 1942.
Levi was active in his community, serving on the city council, church board, Cokato Association, and Cokato Corn Carnival, and was a member of the Wednesday morning men’s Bible study.
Levi had a wide variety of interests and things that gave him enjoyment. Early in life, he and Gen did a lot of fishing together with friends, Levi also pheasant hunted. He loved to talk about the weather and sports. There was only one radio station for him, and that was WCCO. He tuned in to listen to the Twins game, or could be found watching the Vikings on TV.
He loved working outside in his yard or garden in the summer, and snow shoveling in the winter. Spending time with his family and the companionship of his dog, Tinkerbell, were important to him. Levi also loved to have a dish of ice cream or a bowl of Wheaties at night.
Levi is survived by his daughter, Pat Rost of Cokato; son, Lanny Rost of Apple Valley; grandchildren, Jason (Christina) Rost and Jennifer (Eddie) Osmancevic; great-grandchildren, Abigail Rost and Cody Osmancevic; and a brother, John Rost of Washington D.C.
