Fred. A. “Fritz” Sauerbrey obituary, 12/16/06


Fred. A. “Fritz” Sauerbrey, age 91, of Mayer, died Saturday Dec. 16, 2006 at Auburn West in Waconia.
He was born Sept. 20, 1915 in Carver County, Victoria, the son of Henry and Caroline (Steinberger) Sauerbrey. Fred was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith.
He was united in marriage to Mary A. Schug June 1, 1943 at the Moravian Church in Chaska; which remained a loving marriage for 63 years.
Fred enjoyed life and volunteered to help others. He loved the game of baseball, helping organize the Augusta Ball Club and managing the team. He helped to build the ball diamond and was responsible for cutting the grass for many years while living at Augusta.
After moving to Mayer, he became active in township government, serving for 14 years as township clerk, and three years as supervisor for Waconia Township.
He was an active member of the Mayer and New Germany Sportsman’s Club, and a member of the Carver County Farm Bureau, where he served on the board of directors for over 30 years.
An active member of the Moravian Church, he served two terms on the board of elders, and one term on the board of trustees. He also was a head usher for many years, taught others about ushering, and ushering for many funerals.
Fred loved farming and was proud of his Guernsey cows and Yorkshire hogs. He enjoyed the smell of fresh-cut alfalfa hay and driving the tractor up and down the fields.
He loved to swim and swam across Piersons Lake. He supported his children when they participated in music and sports in school.
Fred and Mary were great dancers dancing polkas, waltzes and ballroom dancing. One of his favorites was the “Blue Skirt Waltz.”
Fritz is preceded in death by a son, David; grandson David; father and mother, Henry and Caroline Sauerbrey; brothers John “Roy,” Todd, and Harold; and sisters Irene, Dorothy, Delores, and Agnes.
He is survived by his loving family: wife Mary; children and spouses Roger and Linda Sauerbrey of Norwood Young America, Richard and Sandy Sauerbrey of Montrose, and Carol and Jon Hobert of Cokato; daughter-in-law and husband Jeanne and Darold Zick of Minnetonka; grandchildren Ann and Phil Bovy, Sheila and Jeff Munsterteiger, Shara Lyn Clark, Allen and Heather Sauerbrey, Aaron and Heather Hobert, and Matthew Sauerbrey.; and great-grandchildren Mikayla, Nathan, Owen, Ezekiel, Zachary, Joseph, Antonio, Genevieve, and Marcus.
Fred is further survived by brothers and sisters-in-law Jim and Florance Sauerbrey of Apple Valley, LeRoy and Connie Sauerbrey of Fredrick Wis., Robert Sauerbrey of Lewis Wis., Marvin and Mary Sauerbrey of Surgeon Lake, Bill and Kathy Sauerbrey of St. Paul, Orville and Elaine Sauerbrey of Bend Ore., Marie “Snip” Steinberger of Victoria, and Marge Sauerbrey of Burnsville; sisters and brothers-in-law Lois and Ross Hughes of Seattle Wash., Mary Ann and Dean Loucks of Martinez Ga., Helen and Norman Matthews of Fredrik Wis., Joyce and Jack Klingbeil of Le Center Wash., Ruth and Clay Tibbs of Cottage Grove, Martha and George Hauer of St. Paul Park, Linda and Jim Grinnell of Rice Lake Wis., and Bert Zillmer of Center City; sisters-in-law Clarine Ray of St. Paul, Margaret Schug of Golden Valley, Alice Schug of Eden Prairie, and Celeste Schug of Norwood Young America; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral service was Wednesday Dec. 20 at 11 a.m. at the Moravian Church Waconia with the Rev. John Wallace officiating. Interment was at Zoar Moravian Cemetery, Laketown Twp., Waconia.
Casket bearers were Allen Sauerbrey, Aaron Hobert, Matthew Sauerbrey, Phil Bovy, Jeff Munsterteiger, Jon Sauerbrey, Tim Schug, George Schug Jr., and Steve Schmitz
Arrangements were with the Johnson Funeral Home in Waconia.
