Donald F. Schlagel, age 87, of rural Howard Lake, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2006 at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia.
He was born Feb. 2, 1919 on his family’s homestead in Victor Township, Wright County, the son of Michael M. and Margaret M. (Mulvanny) Schlagel. Donald lived his entire life on the Schlagel family farm.
Donald was joined in holy marriage with Myrtle M. Posusta Sept. 18, 1940 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted by Father Wey. God blessed their marriage with six children.
Don and Myrtle engaged in dairy farming for many years. Don also owned and operated Don Schlagel Livestock Trucking.
He was a lifelong, faithful member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted.
Don served 24 years as a Victor Township supervisor and as a board member of the Winsted Farmers Elevator.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Beverly; grandson Joey Bayerl; his parents, Michael M. and Margaret M. Schlagel; brothers Cecil, Gilbert, and William “Bill;” a sister, Dorothy Kritzeck; father-in-law and mother-in-law Joseph and Matilda Posusta, brothers-in-law Frank Ernhart, Gervase Kritzeck, and Wilfred Posusta; and by a sister-in-law, Lenora Pokorney.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Myrtle M. Schlagel; children: David H. (Mary E.) Schlagel of Forest Lake, Gary A. Schlagel of Howard Lake, Diane M. (Clem) Bayerl of Winsted, Cindy L. (Donald J.) Laxen of Howard Lake, and Galen G. Schlagel of San Diego, Calif.; seven grandchildren: Jason (Jennifer) Schlagel, Alyssa (Jake) Matheis, Kristen Schlagel, Scott (Pam) Bayerl, Frank (Tammy) Bayerl, Candice Laxen, and Daniel Laxen; and nine great-grandchildren
He is further survived by a brother, Alden (Betty) Schlagel of Woodbury; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Lorraine Schlagel, Mary Schlagel, Ray (Rose) Posusta, Irvin (Marge) Posusta, and Dorothy Ernhart; and other relatives and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial took place Saturday, Oct. 21 at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted. Father Paul L. Wolf was the celebrant. Interment followed at Holy Trinity Cemetery.
Visitation was Friday, Oct. 20 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.
Casket bearers were Daniel Laxen, Jason Schlagel, Scott Bayerl, Frank Bayerl, Jsonin Jones, and Tyler and Joey Bayerl.
Arrangements were with the Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted.
