Orland R. “Louie” Schmidt obituary, 1/24/06


Funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 28, for Orland R. “Louie” Schmidt, age 71 of Hollywood Twp., New Germany. Orland died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006 at his home.
He was born Dec. 13, 1934 in Hollywood Twp., New Germany, the son of Rhinehold and Lillie (Luke) Schmidt. Louie was baptized Dec. 30, 1943 at St. John Lutheran Church, Hollywood Twp., New Germany, by the Rev. W. L. Ernst; and confirmed by the same April 10, 1949.
Louie attended St. John Lutheran School in Hollywood Twp., and Watertown Public School.
He was united in marriage with Gladys E. Heldt Nov. 5, 1954 at St. John Lutheran Church, Hollywood Twp., New Germany by the Rev. Robert Heyne.
At a young age, Louie started driving milk can truck, and later purchased Lenzen Livestock, in 1974. He was also an active farmer for many years.
He drove truck until his retirement, but continued to help his son, Randy, with the Schmidt Trucking business until he became ill.
Louie loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed holidays, especially Christmas.
Another of his joys was caring for his animals, sheep, cats, and his co-pilot, “Bud,” the dog. He enjoyed mowing the lawn, riding the lawn mowers, playing cards, listening to old time music, and being with his family.
Louie was preceded in death by granddaughters Anne and Amy Schmidt; parents Rhinehold and Lillie Schmidt; a brother, Alvin “Pete” Schmidt; brothers-in-law Melroy Mielke and Russel Lenz; and sisters-in-law Murella Schmidt and Lila Heldt.
He is survived by his loving family: wife Gladys; children and spouses, Wendy and Arlo Kellermann, and Randy “Moose” and Kathy Schmidt, all of New Germany, and Terry “Bucky” Schmidt and special friend Melinda Voss-Anderson of Silver Lake; grandchildren Nathan and Janelle Kellermann, Hiedi and Greg Broll, Paul Kellermann, Holli Schmidt and special friend Josh Boll, Sarah Kellermann, Hilary Schmidt, and Bonnie Anderson; and great-grandchildren Camarae, Chloey, and Noah Kellermann; and Jadon Schmidt.
Louie is further survived by a brother, Ralph Schmidt of Hopkins; sisters LaVerna Mielke of New Germany, and Alice Lenz of Mayer; sister-in-law Glenna Schmidt of Mayer; brother-in-law Orville Heldt of Glencoe; and nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
The Rev. Robert J. Rupprecht officiated at the 11 a.m. funeral service at St. John Lutheran Church, Hollywood Twp., New Germany. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Casket bearers were Louie’s grandchildren: Nathan and Janelle Kellermann, Hiedi and Greg Broll, Paul Kellermann, Holli Schmidt and special friend Josh Boll, Sarah Kellermann, and Hilary Schmidt.
Arrangements were by the Johnson Funeral Home of Waconia.
