Harvey L. “Spud” Schulze obituary, 10/1/06


Harvey L. “Spud” Schulze, age 80, of Rockford, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2006 at Ridgeview Medical Center in Wayzata.
He was born Jan. 22, 1926 in rural Rockford, the son of William H. and Olga M. Vergin Schulze. Harvey was baptized Feb. 21, 1926 at Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rockford by the Rev. William F. Pankow. H was also instructed in Lutheran Catechism and confirmed in the Christian faith July 9, 1939 at the same church by the Rev. Samuel Baer.His confirmation memory verse was I John 1:7 “The blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”
Harvey graduated from Rockford High School in 1944. Immediately after graduation, he was called to serve in the US Army. He honorably served his country for two years.
Harvey was joined in holy marriage to Agatha Giese May 22, 1948, at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Greenfield by the Rev. W. P. Haar. God blessed their marriage with four children.
After military service, Harvey started working for Red Owl, Inc. in Hopkins, where he was employed until he retired in 1986. He was a member of the Warehouseman Teamsters Union 544.
A faithful, lifetime member of Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rockford, Harvey served as a past treasurer. He was also on the Rockford School Board for two terms, a former member of the Rockford American Legion Post 628, and a current member of the Delano American Legion Post 377.
Harvey enjoyed bowling, fishing, and hunting. He formerly played and managed the Rockford Town Baseball team.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Agatha D. Schulze; children, Avionne (Peter) Heibel, Joel (Michelle) Schulze, all of Rockford, Timothy (Rhonda) Schulze of Delano, and Todd (Mary) Schulze of Buffalo; grandchildren Nichole (Ricky) Rux, Jessica Heibel, Jeremy Heibel, Derek Schulze and Troy Schulze, Timarie Schulze and Andrew Schulze, and Anthony Schulze and Carrie Schulze; sisters-in-law Hertha Dixon, Caroline Giese, and Lucille Schulze-Packard; and many other relative and friends.
Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, William H and Olga Vergin Schulze; a brother, Clinton V. Schulze; a sister, Marilyn Mutterer; a sister-in-law, Anita Dixon; and brothers-in-law Kenneth Dixon, Waldemar Giese, Walt Mutterer, and Donald Dixon.
Funeral services were Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 2 p.m. at Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rockford, with the Rev. Michael T. Barlow officiating. Janet Beise was the organist for the funeral service. Congregational hymns were “Precious Lord, Take my Hand,” “Onward Christian Soldiers,” and “God Be With You Till We Meet Again.” Interment with military rites followed at Elmwood Cemetery.
Friends called Tuesday, Oct. 3 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the church, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.
Honorary casket bearers were John Werner, Irving Hessel, Roger Dressen, Kermit Meyer, James Herder, Richard Anderson, Dwight Heairet, Milo Vail, James Gregory, and Eugene O’Brian.
Casket bearers were Virgil Wagner, Merrill Baker, Ken Lemmage, Bruce Schulze, Steven Vergin, James Dixon, and Glen Hohenstein.
The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo served the family.
