Irving “Irv” Setterberg obituary, 1/7/06


Irving “Irv” Setterberg of Arizona, and formerly of Cokato, died Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006, after a long illness. The highly respected and successful founder of Setterberg Jewelers in Arizona, passed away at the Prescott Valley Samaritan Nursing Home.
Irv was born in Minnesota, and a graduate of Cokato High School. He was an avid hunter and golfer.
His parents were in the jewelry business and in 1946, Irv went to work in his father’s store in Cokato.
In 1955, Irv and his wife, Mary, purchased the store from his dad, Walter. Irv was active in local civic clubs and state jewelry organizations. He joined Rotary in 1962, where he served as a past president.
Mary and Irv sold their store to brother Wendell in 1968, and moved to Phoenix.
Phoenix jeweler Paul Johnson and Irv opened “Paul Johnson Jewelers” in Sun City, Ariz. in November 1968.
In January of 1969, Irv joined the Sun City Rotary Club. He was president of the Sun Bowl Merchants Association for several terms, and a member of the Northwest Valley Chamber. He was an American Gemological Society Registered Jeweler.
In 1974, Irv and Paul bought out “Jewels International” in the La Ronde Center, in Sun City. Then, in January 1981, Paul took over the La Ronde store, while Irv and Mary continue to manage the Sun Bowl store. This was the first “Setterberg Jewelers” store in Sun City.
Irv and Randy Anderson, of Dassel, were partners in a Setterberg store in Sun City West; and brother Wendell and Irv opened their Sun City Campana Square store in October 1981.
Irv and Wendell are from a family of jewelers. Their father and two uncles, another brother, Roger, and sister Betty are also in the business; as are Irv’s and Mary’s son, Rick, and daughter, Marian.
Irv was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Mary.
He is survived by his son, Rick (Sandy); daughter Marian (Frank) Tobin; grandchildren Brent (Kristi) George, and Jason (Jennifer), Shannon, and Micheal Setterberg.; and great-grandchildren Makenna and Luke George, and Hayden, Hunter and Gabrielle Setterberg.
Irv is further survived by brothers Wendell (Lois), and Roger (Shirley) Setterberg; sisters Mariann (Earle) Dickinson, and Betty (Dave) Barnes; numerous nieces and nephews, and countless friends.
A memorial service took place Saturday, Jan. 14, at 1 p.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Arizona with Pastor Mark Tilley officiating.
The Hampton Funeral Home in Arizona handled the arrangements.
