Gary Ross Vangen
Gary Ross Vangen, age 64, of Howard Lake, died Monday, Oct. 23, 2006 at the St. Cloud Hospital.
He was born July 3, 1942, the son of Minord and Harriet (Anderson) Vangen in New Richland. Gary was baptized Aug. 23, 1942 at First Lutheran Church in Ellendale, and confirmed June 2, 1957.
Gary graduated from Ellendale High School in 1960. Following graduation, he was employed by the bank in Hope, Minn. In 1963, he was hired by Security State Bank in Albert Lea.
Gary married Julianne Wuerflein in Albert Lea Sept. 7, 1963. In December 1963, they moved to Mason City, Iowa, where Gary was employed by United Home Bank and Trust Co. In 1964, his eldest son, Jason was born, followed by Daniel in 1966.
Gary became manager of Woden Branch of First State Bank, Britt, Iowa in 1968. From 1973-1975, he worked for Peoples Bank and Trust of Grand Junction, Iowa.
In 1975, Gary started a 30-year career at Security State Bank of Howard Lake, retiring in March, 2005.
Gary was active in many community and church organizations. He had been president of Wright County Bankers Association, treasurer of St. John’s Lutheran Church, and active in the annual Howard Lake Expo, Howard Lake Good Neighbor Days, and the Lake Chapter of ABATE, until his health no longer permitted.
Throughout his life, Gary had a passion for sports. He participated in all high school sports and played town team baseball upon graduation. He coached little league baseball in Iowa, and loved watching the Twins, Vikings, and Gophers.
Gary enjoyed camping and traveling, particularly in the Canadian Rockies. He grew up on a farm with horses and enjoyed collecting model horses and displaying them hitched to wagons and farm implements.
Gary is survived by his wife, Julianne of Howard Lake; two sons, Jason (Davida) of Lewiston, Idaho, and Daniel of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; grandson Larry Block of Maryland, and stepgrandson MacKenzie (Max) Kelly of Lewison, Idaho; sister Sharon (Herman) Marthaler of Cambridge; brother James (Carolyn) of Albert Lea; mother-in-law Vione Wuerflein of Albert Lea; brother-in-law Jerome (DeLoris)Wuerflein of Albert Lea; sisters-in-law Maureen (Glenn) Ruble and Frances Thompson, both of Albert Lea; and nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents; brother David; father- in-law Milford Wuerflein; and nephews Brent Marthaler and Milford Wuerflein II.
Funeral services were Thursday, Oct. 26 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Howard Lake with the Rev. Joel Swedberg officiating. Music was provided by Grant Judd and Marienne Krietlow. Interment was in Hill Crest Cemetery in Albert Lea.
Casket bearers were Paul Carlson, Ken Christensen, Ross Danielson, Dan Laney, Dan Pierce, and Darrell Stenberg.
Honorary casket bearers wwere Herman Marthaler, Glenn Ruble, Todd Thompson, Greg Vangen, James Vangen, and Jerome Wuerflein.
Arrangements were by the Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home in Howard Lake.
