G. Donald “Westy” Westerlund obituary, 4/11/06


G. Donald “Westy” Westerlund, age 84, formerly of Cokato, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2006 at Methodist Hospice in St. Louis Park.
A memorial open house will take place Saturday, April 22, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Washburn McReavy Strobeck Johnson Chapel, 1400 Mainstreet, Hopkins. Private interment at Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Cokato.
Don was born and raised in Cokato. He joined the Navy in 1939 and served on six ships, including the USS Sepulga and USS Gladiator, until 1945.
He was employed by Moorhead Implement in Howard Lake, until 1952, when he began his long career with the Ford Motor Co. – Northwest Tractor & Implement Div., retiring in 1980.
For many years, Don served as a Hennepin County deputy sheriff. He was a member of the Menomonie, Wis. Masonic Lodge 164 for 50 years; achieving Master Mason in 1960. He was also a member of the Eau Claire, Wis. Scottish Rite, and the Minneapolis Zurah Shrine.
Don is survived by his children, Gary (Carol), Diane Peters, and Bob (Jean); their mother, Julie (Lindahl) Westerlund; grandchildren Michael (Lisa) Westerlund, Cheri (Chad) Clabaugh, and Julie Ellingson; great-granddaughter Callie Clabaugh; sister, Marilyn (Kenneth) Holmes; and extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by Irene (Degidio) Westerlund, and a sister and brother-in-law, Lorraine and Andy Hanson.
