Cyril A. Aretz, age 80, of Cologne died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2007, at the Elim Home in Watertown.
He was born Feb. 23, 1927, in Cologne, the son of Frank and Elsie (Knott) Aretz. Cyril was baptized and confirmed at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Cologne.
Cyril was a WWII veteran and served his country in the US Navy.
He was married to Shirley A. Bailey June 24, 1950, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Belle Plaine by Father Weiers. Cyril and Shirley bought the Aretz family farm in 1962.
In addition to farming, Cyril also worked as an artificial breeder for American Breeder Service from 1957 until his retirement in 1990.
He was a lifelong member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Cologne, and was also a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Aid, and the Cologne VFW.
Cyril was a loving husband, dad, grandpa, and great-grandpa. During his retirement, he enjoyed restoring old Ford tractors, listening to old tyme music, polka dancing, and spending time with family and friends. He also enjoyed spending time at the casinos because he considered himself “lucky.”
Cyril was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen Aretz; parents Frank and Elsie Aretz; brothers and sisters-in-law Raymond and Violet Aretz, Richard and Cecilia Aretz, Sylvester Aretz, and Francis Aretz; sister and brother-in-law Lucille and Oswald Erhard; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Thomas Braunwarth, Dennis Bailey, Earl Meyer, Eugene Fahey, Isabelle and Myron Farrell, Catherine Bigaouette, Irene and Earl Madden, and Rosemary and Mark Berger.
He is survived by his loving family: wife Shirley; children and spouses, Francis and Bonnie Aretz of Rosemount, Patricia and Mervin Metcalf of Cologne, Colleen Schilz of Shakopee, Susan and Stanley Bebo of Howard Lake, Denise and John Bebo of Lester Prairie, David Aretz of Cologne, Russell Aretz of Cologne, Roy and Carol Aretz of Lakeville, and Anna and Steven Renne of Belle Plaine; 31 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Cyril is further survived by a sister, Dorothy Braunwarth of Norwood Young America; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Leona Aretz of Waconia, Helen Meyer of California, Betty and Francis Hammers of Chaska, Teresa Fritz of Chaska, Jodell and Merlin Battcher of Arizona, Mary Fahey of Wisconsin, and Francis and Florence Bigaouette of Arlington; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday, Dec. 15 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Cologne with Father Martin Shallbetter as celebrant of the Mass. Interment with military graveside services provided by the VFW took place at St. Bernard’s Catholic Cemetery.
Casket bearers were Cyril’s grandchildren, Michael Aretz, Mathias Weinzierl, Greg Meuffels, Ryan Bebo, Alan Bebo, Christopher Aretz, Nicholas Aretz, and Jodi Renne.
Arrangements were with the Johnson Funeral Home in Waconia.
