Donald T. Babatz
Donald T. Babatz, age 73, of Montrose, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2007 at Ridgeview Medical Center from complications due to Parkinson’s.
He was born June 30, 1934 in Montrose, the son of William M. and Mary J. Pollock Babatz Sr.
Don graduated from Buffalo High School in 1952.
He later honorably served his country in the US Army.
Donald was joined in holy marriage to Kathleen M. Nelson June 6, 1964 at the Church of St. Mary in Waverly. God blessed their marriage with four children.
As a young man, Don was employed at Lundsten Lumber Yard in Delano and Maple Plain, and also at Jerry Dubbin’s Service Station in Montrose. He was employed for more than 30 years at Washington Scientific, Inc. in Long Lake, and belonged to Teamster Union Local 970.
A faithful, lifelong member of the Church of St. Mary in Waverly, Don also served 24 years on the Montrose Fire Department. He was the fire department’s longtime secretary and a past Montrose fire chief.
He enjoyed fishing, mowing lawn, antique tractors, polka music, gardening, and going out eat with his family, and for a Sunday drive.
Don loved being with his family, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen M. Babatz; children, Barb (Jeff) Krause of Montrose, Sue (Greg) Dearing of Buffalo, and Alan (Jennifer) Babatz of Montrose; and grandchildren, Allison and Miranda Krause, Emily Dearing, Ryan Babatz, and Ellie Dearing.
Don is further survived by his mother, Mary J. Babatz of Buffalo; brothers and sisters, James Babatz of Excelsior, Deloris (Charles) Klopp of Buffalo, and William J. (Marlette) Babatz Jr. of Montrose; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Mary Ann (Jeff) Gaskell of Florida, Joyce Nelson of Wisconsin, and Rick (Pat) Nelson of Colorado; his godmother, Mary Motzko of Watertown; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mark Babatz; his father, William M. “Bill” Babatz Sr.; a sister-in-law, Patricia Babatz; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Eleanor and Clifton “Cliff” Nelson; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Betty and Mike Smith, a nephew, Dennis Babatz; and by his godfather, Tom Salonek.
A Mass of Christian Burial took place Thursday, Aug. 9 at 10:30 a.m. at Church of St. Mary in Waverly with Father Timothy Cloutier as the celebrant. Interment followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Friends called Wednesday, Aug. 8 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Peterson Chapel in Buffalo, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation continued Thursday, Aug. 9 at the church for one hour prior to the Mass.
Casket bearers were Jeff Krause, Greg Dearing, Chuck Klopp, Tim Babatz, Greg Babatz, and Gary Scheuble.
The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo served the family.
