Clara Ann Marie Becker
Clara Ann Marie Becker, age 72, of Winthrop, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007, at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park.
She was born March 13, 1934, in Bismarck Township, Sibley County, the daughter of Arthur and Hertha (Polzin) Gutknecht. Clara was baptized as an infant April 1, 1934, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Bismarck Township, by the Rev. Peter Miller, and was confirmed in her faith as a youth April 20, 1947, by the Rev. A.F. Zenk at the same church.
She received her education at country school in Bismarck Township.
Clara was united in marriage to Elmer Becker July 1, 1951, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Bismarck Township, by the Rev. Alex Schira. This union was blessed with six children.
The couple farmed in Bismarck Township for many years. After retirement, Clara and Elmer both worked part-time at JB Lures in Winthrop for several years. The couple shared 55 years of marriage.
Clara was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Penn Township, where she was active in the church choir, Ladies Aid, as a Sunday school superintendent, and on the church council. She was also the chairperson of the Senior Citizens in New Auburn.
She enjoyed playing cards, baking, and gardening. She especially loved spending time with her family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Clara is survived by her husband, Elmer Becker of Winthrop; children, Diane Knuth and husband, Marlow of Dassel, LaVonne Nelson and husband, Craig of Darwin, Rhonda Stenzel and husband, David of Winthrop, Barbara Trout and husband, Tom of Loveland, Colo., Sharon Carrigan and husband, David of Glencoe, and Cynthia Youngblom and husband, Robert of Lafayette, Minn.; 18 grandchildren, Melissa Ostlund, April (Michael) Painter, Laura (Neil) Karnik, Paula (Caleb) Rannow, Dan Nelson, Kate (Drew) Broseth, Mariah (Kevin) Shepersky, Crystal (Jared) Heldt, John Stenzel, Kate (Jon) Maiers, Lisa Stenzel, Sarah (Troy) Heber, Nathan (Anissa) Trout, Amanda (Paul) Wentink, Darren (Cassandra) Carrigan, RaNaye Carrigan, Tiffany Youngblom, and Lucas Youngblom; and 17 great-grandchildren.
She is further survived by a sister, Helen (Ellsworth) Becker of Glencoe; brothers, Otto Gutknecht of Winthrop, and Larry (Sharon) Gutknecht of Glencoe; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Clarence (Oda) Comnick of Glencoe, Halbert (Beverly) Becker of New Auburn, Rosie Ehlers of Green Isle, Linda Schuch of Glencoe, Gerhard (Myrtice) Becker of Brownton, and Elmer Burdorf of Arlington; nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
Clara was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Hertha Gutknecht; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Fred and Ida Becker; grandsons, Robert Stenzel and Jason Samuelson; sisters-in-law Arlene Burdorf, Melva Becker, Helen Becker, Esther Becker, Lorraine Burdorf, and Ann Gutknecht; and brothers-in-law, Raymond Becker, Leonhard Becker, Art Ehlers, and Ebert Schuch.
Funeral service was Monday, Feb. 19 at 11 a.m. at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Penn Township, McLeod County, with the Rev. Andrew Hermodson-Olsen officiating. Organist was Marsha Kruse, and soloist Darwin Frauendienst sang, “My Faith Looks Up to Thee.” Congregational hymns were “How Great Thou Art” and “Children Of The Heavenly Father.”
Visitation was Sunday, Feb. 18, from 4 to 8 p.m. and continued Monday, Feb. 19 from 7:30 to 8 a.m.at the Dalin-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Winthrop, as well as one hour prior to the service at the church.
Casket bearers were John Stenzel, Darren Carrigan, Lucas Youngblom, Nathan Trout, Michael Painter, Jonathon Maiers, Paul Wentink, Neil Karnik, Caleb Rannow, Drew Broseth, Kevin Shepersky, Jared Heldt, Troy Heber, and Dan Nelson.
