Helen Lorella Blodgett
Helen Lorella Blodgett, age 88, of Cokato, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2007 at the Cokato Manor. Helen was the last of her 15 siblings to pass away, having beat cancer in 1981.
She was born July 24, 1918 in Waverly to Jacob and Katherine (Hayner) Kuchenmeister. Helen was raised in Waverly and attended St. Mary’s School there.
She was married to Lyle May 25, 1935. They lived in Waverly and Howard Lake, and moved to Cokato in the summer of 1950.
Helen loved traveling, including trips to to the cabin at Swatara, to visit her daughters in Tucson, Ariz., and Adams, Wis., and to Hennessey, Okla, and Los Angeles, Calif. She enjoyed word find puzzles, playing Skip-Bo, and bird watching. She loved flowers, had an owl collection, and enjoyed going fishing.
Helen and her “helpers” would can 100-plus jars of sauerkraut each year. Helen also raised trout and Mallard ducks on her farm.
She is survived by her children, Elaine (Don) Opsahl of South Haven, Gene Blodgett of Cokato and friend Yvonne, Glenn Blodgett of Cokato and dear friend Kay, and Judy (Ernesto) Bonillas of Tucson, Ariz.; eight grandchildren, Carol, Susan, Michele, Gene Jr., Dawn, Julianne, Angela, and Bryanna; nine great-grandchildren, Jamie, Krista, Jedidiah, Tayler, Amanda, Christopher, Kristen, Nicole, and Brittany; and two great-great-grandchildren, Blake and Jozey.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle; parents Jacob and Katherine Kuchenmeister; brothers, Bill, Ray, John, George, Francis, Gilbert and Edmond; sisters, Mary Ann, Catherine, Josephine, Clara, Loretta, Evelyn and Leona; daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Blodgett; and grandson Sean Blodgett.
A memorial service took place Saturday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. at Church of Christ in Dassel, with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. The Rev. Marc Grindle officiated at the memorial service. Music was provided by Maribel Gilmer and Jeanett Tomlinson.
The Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home in Cokato handled the arrangements.
