Janet A. Compton, age 103, of Delano, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2007.Grandma Janet passed away peacefully a short distance from the house where she was born 103 years ago.
Born five days after the Wright Brothers’ famous flight, Janet’s family moved to Illinois, and then returned to Minnesota when she was still quite young, where she remained for the rest of her life.
During her lifetime, Janet was witness to many new inventions and a man walking on the moon. She also observed many tragedies including two world wars, the sinking of the Titanic, and acts of terrorism.
After her marriage to Mathew Compton in 1925, Janet raised her five boys in Delano. She saw them grow up and have families of their own, and became “Grandma” to several generations.
Janet was a “grandmother” to many other children as well, and will be remembered for the quilts that she made.
She was a member of the Delano Senior Choir for 20 years.
Janet was preceded in death by her husband, Mathew.
She is survived by sons, Roger, Tom (Muriell), Lyle, Vern (Marge), and David (Delores); 33 grandchildren; 69 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and all of her friends at the Delano Senior Center.
Funeral service was Saturday, March 3 at 11 a.m. at Delano United Methodist Church, with interment at the Delano Public Cemetery.
Visitation took place at the church Friday March 2 from 3 to 8 p.m., and continued Saturday for one hour prior to the funeral service.
Arrangements were by the Will-werscheid Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Saint Paul.
