John was born Oct. 27, 1923 to John and Elizabeth (Becker) Elsen in Loretto, and raised on a family farm, which he managed for many years.
He worked for a local creamery and did some block laying until he started at Tonka Corp., where he worked for 25 years.
John was the epitome of a true family man loving nothing more than being surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren. He enjoyed traveling and taking advantage of many Sunday afternoons for leisurely drives and hikes up the railroad tracks.
Music was another of John’s passions. In his earlier years, he was a member of the church choir, and in more recent years, enjoyed listening to his polka channel on TV every afternoon. He was always the first to begin “Lang Zullen Zy Leven” at family gatherings.
An active member of his community and church, John was always there to lend a hand or take a shut-in to an appointment. His greatest passion, however was his faith and trust in Christ, which sustained him through all the ups and downs over the years.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth and John; and siblings Sister Flavia SSND, Nicholas, and Al.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Eileen; children, Jeannie and John Bagshaw, Judy and Mark Fussell, Renee and Paul Tackes, Sharon and Tony Raskob, Yvonne and Tim Litfin, John and Jody Elsen, Patti and Dale Jensen, Larry and Lori Elsen, Susan and Dave Woll, and Mike Elsen; 18 grandchildren; his sister, Sister Honora SSND; and sister-in-law Betty Elsen; as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Arrangements are by the Iten Funeral Home in Delano.
