Bernice Mildred Engelman
Bernice Mildred Engelman, age 91, of Howard Lake, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2007 at the Howard Lake Good Samaritan Care Center.
She was born March 14, 1915 in Minneapolis, the daughter of William and Josephine (Logeais) Anderson.
Bernice was united in marriage to Alvin Engelman June 14, 1934 at St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake by the Rev. C. G. Seltz. They made their home in Howard Lake, and were blessed with seven children, four sons and three daughters.
Bernice was a homemaker who enjoyed raising her children, and especially spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gardening and canning fruits and vegetables were some of her favorite activities.
After Alvin’s death in 1991, Bernice began quilting with St. James Naomi Guild.
In addition to her husband, Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Erland; two brothers, Russell Anderson and Gerald Anderson; one sister, Margie Schmidt; and a great-granddaughter.
She is survived by three sons and three daughters: Chet Engelman and Val of Thief River Falls, Duane Engelman and Darlene of Rosemount, Fil Engelman of San Antonio, Texas, Rosalie Adams of Tulsa, Okla., Rosemarie Workman and Jim of Maple Lake, and Janice Comstock and Steve of Howard Lake; 20 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one sister, Geraldine Lampi of Elk River; nieces, nephews, and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral service was Thursday, Jan. 11 at 2 p.m. at St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake with the Revs. Michael Nirva and Martin Schoenfeld officiating. Nancy Butterfass was the organist. Interment followed at the St. James Lutheran Cemetery on Dutch Lake.
Visitation was Wednesday, Jan. 10 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home in Howard Lake, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., and continued Thursday for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Pallbearers were Bernice’s grandsons: Jeff Workman, Eric Workman, Joe Comstock, Steve Comstock, Tom Comstock, Doug Engelman, Dean Engelman, Brian Engelman, Brent Engelman, Arlie Engelman, Larry Engelman, and Rob Engelman.
Arrangements were by the Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home in Howard Lake.
