Donna Mae Fertig

Donna Mae Fertig, age 75, of Buffalo, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007, after a long battle with several health issues.

She was born Aug. 9, 1932, in Hallock, Minn., to John and Elma (nee Skold) Holmgren. Donna grew up and graduated from high school in Lake Bronson, Minn.

After graduation, she went to college in Grand Forks, graduating from nursing school, and also receiving her degree in teaching. She began her teaching career in Long Prairie, Minn., but shortly after, found herself teaching in St. Cloud.

She was united in marriage to Sheldon Ellis Fertig, also of Lake Bronson, March 7, 1959. As a couple, they moved to Buffalo to begin their family and to continue their teaching careers. They were blessed with four children.

Donna Mae’s interests included flower and vegetable gardening, knitting, making sure everyone in the family had her slippers; sewing, ceramics, making gifts for others, baking, and spending time with family and friends. She loved the outdoors and spent as much time as possible outside. Donna enjoyed time spent at her parents’ cabin or at the lake, back home in Lake Bronson. She was an avid bird and squirrel watcher, always making sure they had plenty to eat.

Donna loved her dog, Buffy and even found a soft spot for that darn cat. She always found time to listen, had a heart of gold, and with a sparkle in her eye, was a prankster, always making others laugh.

She was a long-time member of Zion Lutheran Church in Buffalo.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents, John and Elma Holmgren; and by her sister, Betty Ann Shablow.

She is survived by her husband, Sheldon Sr.; children, Sheldon (Sharon) Fertig II of Waverly, Clair (Char Keck) Fertig of Buffalo, Michele (Daryl) Cardinal of Monticello, and Jonay (Kevin) Krone of Monticello; grandchildren, Sheldon III, Shane (Kristina), Amanda, Ashley, Jeremy, Cammey, Devin, and Jacob; great-granddaughter Jenaveve; nephews; nieces; and many good friends.

The funeral service was Tuesday, Nov. 27 at 2 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church of Buffalo, with one hour visitation prior to the start of the service. The pastor was Becky Sogge. Interment was at Zion Lutheran Cemetery of Buffalo.
