Wendel Vernon Hawkins obituary, 9/16/07


Wendel Vernon Hawkins, age 72, of Litchfield, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2007, at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis.
He was born Sept. 9, 1935 in Clearwater, Minn., the son of John and Mary (Arneaud) Hawkins. Wendel grew up in Clearwater, where he attended school.
He was inducted into the US Army and served his country during the Vietnam War.
Wendel was united in marriage to Aunita Rogers in 1964. To this union, a son, Joseph, was born.
Wendel worked as an aircraft mechanic at the El Monte Airport in Los Angeles County, Calif. He moved to Minnesota and made his home in Litchfield for the past several years.
Wendel enjoyed bowling and was an avid golfer. He could be found swinging a club five days a week if he had a chance.
He is survived by his son, Joseph (Jennifer) Hawkins of Chatsworth, Calif.; stepson David (Thia) Mortenson of Minnetonka; two grandchildren, Christopher and Brenton Hawkins; two step-grandchildren, Denna and Corwin Mortenson; brothers, Dwight Hawkins of Grove City, John Hawkins of Coon Rapids, and Orville Hawkins of Hutchinson; and sisters Ava (Bill) Flachmeyer of Dassel, and Delora (Donald) Hilmanowski of Hutchinson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Albert and Kenneth; and an infant brother, Leon.
A time to gather with family and friends took place Wednesday, Sept. 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel. Inurnment was Thursday, Sept. 20 at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
The Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel handled the arrangements.
