Herbert William Hess

Herbert William Hess, age 93, of North Kingston, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2007, at the Lakeside Health Care Center of Dassel.

He was born Nov. 27, 1913, in the Highland area, Middleville Township, north of Howard Lake, Wright County, to Alex and Emma (Anderson) Hess. Herbert attended the Highland country school, across the road from the family farm in Middleville Twp.

In 1933, the Hess family moved to South Kingston Twp. in Meeker County, where they farmed,

Herbert married Lillian Marie Leppa Jan. 29, 1938, at Kingston.

They dairy and crop farmed their entire married life in Kingston and North Kingston townships, except for a short time when they rented the Dr. George Sherwood farm on the south edge of Kimball. Their Guernsey herd was one of the few in the area.

Herbert and Lillian retired in 1969, but remained on the farm. Lillian died Jan. 2, 2000.

After retirement, Herbert became an avid woodcrafter, building log cabin bird feeders and various other wood products. He bowled with the senior citizen leagues in Kimball, was an avid reader, and loved to fish.

Herbert entered the Dassel Lakeside Home Aug. 30, 2006.

Survivors include his children and their spouses: Joyce Marie and Rudy Burgstaler, Rodney and Loreen Hess, Robert D. and Barbara Hess, all of Kimball, and JoAnne K. and Mel Terning of Cokato; grandchildren and their spouses: Evan and Aimee Burgstaler of Cavour, S.D., Lyle Burgstaler of Kimball, Denise Hess of White Bear Lake, and Heather and David Reischl of Kimball; step-grandchildren Season and David Kryzer of Milaca; great-grandchildren Tara, Hannah Marie and Megan Burgstaler of Cavour, S.D., and Isabelle Emma, Tyler, and Riley Reischl of Kimball; and step-great-grandchildren Emily Mulvey and Brennan Kryzer.

Herbert is further survived by a sister-in-law, Romel Hess Lembke of Litchfield; and many nieces; nephews; and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian; parents; brothers Marvin, Dale, Al, Jim, Don, Russel, Ray, and George; and sisters Isabelle (Tillie) Buckman Anderson, and Florence (Mrs. John) Raskie.

Funeral service was Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 11 a.m. at the Apostolic Lutheran Church in Kingston with Pastor Orval Wirkkala and the Rev. Melinda Melhus officiating. Interment was at the Apostolic Lutheran Church cemetery.

Visitation took place Tuesday, Nov. 27 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel, and continued Wednesday for one hour prior to the service at the church.

The Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel handled the arrangements.
