John L. Holmes, age 93, of Watertown, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2007, at the Elim Home in Watertown.
He was born Sept. 3, 1914, in Roosevelt, Minn., on the Canadian border, the son of Savin S. and Mary A. (Pilgram) Holmes. The family later relocated to Watertown.
John married Eva C. Carlson June 14, 1941, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Watertown with the Rev. Anderson officiating.
A teamster truck driver, John loved the open road. He was a part-time farmer, which brought him much joy, and he loved being with his family.
John was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church cemetery board and a city council member.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Carolyn Dahl; parents Savin and Mary Holmes; infant sister Elizabeth; and brother Arthur Holmes.
John is survived by his loving family: wife Eva; children and their spouses, Barbara and Russ Jerde of Maple Plain, Jack and Joan Holmes of Elk River, Nancy and John Donahue of Austin, Darrel and Shelley Holmes of Watertown, and Kevin and Diane Holmes of Sandpoint, Idaho; son-in-law Bernie Dahl of Winona; and grandchildren Mark and Robin Jerde, Mitchell and Michelle Jerde, Michael Jerde, Anne and Kevin Rothstein, Tim and Kelly Dahl, Annette and Rod Trachta, Adam and Anna Holmes, Allison and Russ Risdal, Andy and Jackie Holmes, Jennifer and J.T. Hemann, Danny O. and Jenelle Donahue, Patrick and Ruth Donahue, Chloe and Cory Capitani, Hilary Holmes, Zoey Holmes.
He is further survived by 14 great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law Joseph and Judy Holmes of Minneapolis; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service took place Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 1 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Watertown with the Rev. Robert Ericson officiating. Interment was at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.
Casket bearers were Mitchell Jerde, Adam Holmes, Andy Holmes, Danny O. Donahue, Tim Dahl, Hilary Holmes, Mark Jerde, Michael Jerde, and Patrick Donahue. Honorary casket bearers were Anne Rothstein, Allison Risdal, Annette Trachta, Jennifer Hemann, Chloe Capitani, and Zoey Holmes.
Funeral arrangements were by the Johnson Funeral Home in Waconia.
