Vernon George ‘Snooks’ Jones
Vernon George ‘Snooks’ Jones, age 76, of Buffalo, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2007 at Lake Ridge Care Center in Buffalo.
He was born to Georgie ‘Elnora’ (Wood) and Vernon E. Jones July 6, 1931. In 1935, he moved to Palmer, Alaska with his parents and sister, Peggy. He returned to Minnesota in 1945 with his two sisters, Judy and Phyllis.
Vernon graduated from Onamia High School in 1949, and enlisted in the US Air Force shortly after. He served as an aviation specialist in the Theater of Operations in Korea.
After returning from service, Vernon married Delores. They were blessed with three children and later divorced.
Vernon worked as an equipment installer for Western Electric for 31 years, before retiring in 1983 at the age of 52.
While working in Korea, he met his second wife, Chong, and they were blessed with two more children.
Coming out of retirement, Vernon began working for the Montrose Elementary School for 13 years as a para and crossing guard.
Vernon loved gardening, taking care of his yard, and watching deer in the field.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Judy Orvis.
Vernon is survived by his children: Bruce (Shirley) Jones, Kris Haley, Cheryl (Mike) Krier, and Lynda and Kathy Jones; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters Peggy (Richard) Benz of Rochester, and Phyllis (Jim) Flasch of Brooklyn Park; two nephews; five nieces; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral service was Friday, Oct. 5 at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Buffalo. Interment with military rites followed at Zion Cemetery.
Visitation was Thursday, Oct. 4 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Peterson Chapel Buffalo with a prayer service at 7 p.m., and continued Friday for one hour prior to the service at the church.
The Peterson Chapel Buffalo served the family.
