Joanne H. Karels, age 67, of Waconia, died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007, at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.
She was born June 15, 1940, in Waconia, the daughter of Walter T. and Alvina B. (Terwedo) Schmakel. Joanne was baptized July 14, 1940, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waconia by the Rev. William F. Schneider, and confirmed April 11, 1954, at the same church by the Rev. Robert Heyne.
Joanne was joined in marriage to Donald K. Karels Sept. 26, 1959, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waconia by the Rev. John Stehr.
Joanne loved to go to the casino, play cards, and spend time with her grandchildren, and she enjoyed decorating the house for every single holiday.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Ann Anacker; parents Walter and Alvina Schmakel; sister Marlene McPadden; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Leonard and Irene Karels; and brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Francis and Shirley Karels, Carol Karels, and Gloria Karels.
Joanne is survived by her loving family; husband Don; sons and daughters-in-law, Rick and Patty Karels of Waconia, and Todd and Kirsten Karels of Norwood Young America; son-in-law and wife, Rod and Bobbi Anacker of Monticello; and grandchildren Mitchell Karels, Erica Karels, Casey Karels, Anna Karels, Isabela Karels, Allie Anacker, and Emma Anacker.
She is further survived by brothers and sisters-in-law Walter and Delores Schmakel, Charles and Marlene Schmakel, Kenneth and Alyce Schmakel, all of Waconia, Dale and Karen Schmakel of Sandstone, Larry Schmakel, and LeRoy and Penny Schmakel, also of Waconia, and Neil and Nancy Schmakel of Watertown; sisters and brothers-in-law Lois and Edgar Winckel, Vera and Wallace Dressel, all of Waconia, and Sharon Pearson of St. Louis Park; brother-in-law Gary McPadden of Avon; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Charles Karels of Lakeville, Roger Karels of Waconia, James Karels of Minneapolis, Ruth and Charles Bussey of Hibbing, Donna and Marvin Sluka of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Carol and Keith Mohrbacher of Chaska; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral service took place Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 11 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Waconia with the Rev. Dale Peterson officiating.
Casket bearers were Rick Karels, Todd Karels, Rod Anacker, Mitchell Karels, Casey Karels, Erica Karels, and Allie Anacker.
Arrangements were with the Johnson Funeral Home in Waconia.
