Murl A. Kletscher

Murl A. Kletscher, age 76, of Lester Prairie, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2007 at the Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia.

He was born May 30, 1931, in Vesta, the son of Arthur and Elsie (Kuehn) Kletscher. Murl was baptized June 21, 1931 at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Vesta; and confirmed in the faith at the same church May 14, 1944.

Murl graduated from the Echo Public School in 1949, and received his bachelor of science degree from the Mankato State Teachers College in 1953.

He enlisted in the US Army Aug. 25, 1953, reached the rank of corporal, and was decorated with the National Defense Service Medal. He received his honorable discharge June 1, 1955 at Fort Lewis, Wash.

Murl was united in marriage with Doris R. Braun April 7, 1956 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Buffalo Lake. This union was blessed with three children Gloria, Barrie, and Bruce.

Murl’s education career began with his first teaching position in Buffalo Lake. He had served as principal in Milroy and Clarissa, and superintendent in Gibbon and Wykoff, before moving to Lester Prairie. Murl was the principal at Lester Prairie Schools before taking the superintendent position at Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Schools.

Throughout his career, Murl was very active in the teaching profession, continuing his education at the Mankato Teachers College, University Of Minnesota, and South Dakota State University in Brookings.

Murl was a member of the Lester Prairie American Legion and a past member of the Gibbon Lions. He was very active at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Lester Prairie, serving in many positions.

An avid sports fan, Murl was a big follower of Golden Gopher football. When not watching or attending sporting events, he would often spend time in the garden. Family activities were always a priority for him.

Murl was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Elsie Kletscher; and a sister, Veona Kaehler.

He is survived and sadly missed by his wife, Doris Kletscher of Lester Prairie; children Gloria Lutz (husband Gary) of Eagan, Barrie Kletscher (wife Kathy) of Eagan, and Bruce Kletscher (wife Kim) of Scottsdale, Ariz.; grandchildren Erin, Megan, and Ryan Lutz; Ellen and Diana Kletscher; and Karina, Maren, and William Kletscher; sisters LaVon Werner of Roy, Utah, and Mildred DeMuth of Marshall; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Grace and Kenneth Lackman of Prior Lake, Betty Braun of Hutchinson, Terry and Phyllis Ernst of Lester Prairie, and Don Kaehler of Sleepy Eye; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.

Funeral services celebrating Murls’ life were Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie with the Rev. Eric Nelson officiating. Organist was Marsha Christenson. Congregational hymns were “Abide With Me,” “Amazing Grace,” “How Great Thou Art,” and “Just As I Am.” Interment was in the church cemetery.

Serving as casket bearers were Douglas DeMuth, Bradley Ernst, Charles Ernst, Darren Braun, Scott Kaehler, and James Kaehler.

Arrangements were with the Paul-McBride Funeral Chapel in Lester Prairie.
