Lenore Florence Luhman
Lenore Florence Luhman, age 92, of Howard Lake, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007 at Howard Lake Good Samaritan Care Center.
She was born July 12, 1914 in Chicago, Ill., to Max C. and Mathilda (Stolz) Nerius. Lenore was baptized Aug. 2, 1914 at Christ Lutheran Church of Logan Square Chicago by the Rev. Ernst Werfelmann, and confirmed by the same April 1, 1928.
Lenore graduated from Luther Institute June 18, 1932, and was employed in office work, including three years as a secretary at the Walther League headquarters.
Lenore was married to Eldon A. Luhman Dec. 8, 1945 at Christ Lutheran Church by the Rev. W. G. Dippold. They resided in Howard Lake, where Lenore assisted her husband in the construction business until his retirement in 1973.
Lenore and Eldon enjoyed traveling, visiting many states and also Germany, the South Pacific, Alaska, Israel, and Greece.
An active member of St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake, Lenore served as a Sunday school teacher for many years, and in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League locally, in the circuit, and for four years as corresponding secretary in the Minnesota district.
Lenore began singing in her home church choir in 1930, and she continued in Howard Lake until retirement in June 1999. Singing was her real joy in life. She served as the sing along leader at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Howard Lake from April 1991 to January 1997, and sang for many weddings and funerals.
Lenore also served as volunteer secretary at St. James Lutheran Church for more than 30 years. For 11 years, she was also the treasurer of the congregation. She served as secretary for the social ministry board, treasurer of the Lutheran Laymen’s League, and secretary of the Litchfield Circuit LWML from 1968-1972.
Lenore was preceded in death by her husband, Eldon, Jan. 6, 1991; her parents; brothers Ervin (Eleanore) and Ralph (Florence) Nerius; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Henry and Florence Berg, Walter and Lavon Luhman, Edwin and Leah Luhman, and Henrietta Luhman.
She is survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Funeral service was Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. at St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake with the Revs. Martin Schoenfeld and Michael Nirva officiating. Music was provided by Diane Johnson, organist; members of the LWML, and the St. James Worship Choir. Interment was in St. James Cemetery on Dutch Lake.
Pallbearers were her nephews, Keith Luhman, Richard Luhman, Steven Luhman, Timothy Luhman, Phillip Luhman, and John Berg.
Visitation took place Tuesday, Feb. 6 from 4 to 9 p.m. at Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home in Howard Lake, and continued Wednesday for one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.
Arrangements were by the Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home in Howard Lake.
