George F. “Sonny” Maikkula
George F. “Sonny” Maikkula, age 83, of Dassel, died Tuesday, June 12, 2007 at the Dassel Nursing Home.
He was born in Kingston Jan. 20, 1924 to Laura (Erickson) and Abe Maikkula. George, affectionately known as Sonny, was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church.
He was a Litchfield High School graduate and went on to serve in the US Army.
In early adulthood, he was employed by the Great Northern Railroad and Boeing Aircraft.
Sonny lived in Minneapolis most of his life. He worked in food services for many years in downtown Minneapolis.
He loved to bake and cook and was a great housekeeper. The joy of his life was music, and he knew every word to many, many songs. He also knew the birth date of each of his nieces and nephews.
He loved living in at the “Buckingham,” enjoying the pool and sauna. He and his sister, Laila, frequently had breakfast with friends at McDonalds in the City Center, often opening up the restaurant at 6 a.m.
As his health began to fail, he and Laila moved to St. Cloud; and in June of 2005, Sonny and Laila both joined their sister, Violet, as residents of Dassel Lakeside.
At Dassel Lakeside, Sonny took part in men’s club and any and all things musical.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Mildred Trout, Violet Woulett, Ruth Nelson, and Laila Benson;, brothers Raymond and Robert; and three nephews, Dwight Maikkula, Terry Trout, and Jon Haapajoki.
George is survived by his sister, Pearl Haapajoki; and his nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was Saturday, June 16 at 10:30 a.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel, with visitation for one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Michael Nelson officiated. Music was provided by soloist Lynnette Schroeder, and Glenna and Rick Vandergon, who performed a duet, with accompanist Barbara Root. Interment was at the Apostolic Cemetery in Kingston.
Casket bearers were George’s nieces and nephews.
Arrangements were by the Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel.
