Patricia Marie Amanda Martens

Patricia Marie Amanda Martens [Sandstede], age 68, died Monday, Nov. 12 from complications of illness.

A memorial service will take place Saturday, Dec. 1 at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Dassel at 10 a.m. In addition, a community celebration of her life will take place Saturday, June 21, 2008 in Darwin, with committal at the Ellsworth Cemetery.

Patty was born Nov. 8, 1939 at home in the old farmhouse of the family homestead in Ellsworth Township, Meeker County, the daughter of Carl and Hilda (Maahs) Martens. Many Martens family members were prominent farmers and businessmen in Ellsworth Township beginning in 1876, when the property was first homesteaded.

Patty graduated from Litchfield Senior High in 1957. She attended Abbott Northwestern School of Nursing and was employed by Meeker County Memorial Hospital for many years as a registered nurse.

She married Robert Sandstede of Dassel in June 1961. Together, they had five children: Hild, Mary, Lee, Evan, and Eric, who grew up in the old district 24 schoolhouse that was converted to a comfortable family home. They divorced in 1990.

Patty was a fun-loving woman who loved to dress in bright, wild-patterned clothes and long dangley earrings. She loved her family deeply and always strived to make each family gathering special for all. Her big extended family and friends remember many happy gatherings at her beloved schoolhouse.

In 1997, Patty moved to Fairbanks, Alaska, where she resided until her death.

She loved to read murder mysteries, play cards with dear friends, and listen to Art Bell.

Patty was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Hilda (Maahs) Martens; her sisters, Lois Lepisto and Marie West; and brother Ward Martens.

She is survived by her children: Hild (Sandstede) Peters, husband Guy Peters, and children Caleb and Ethan, of Fairbanks, Alaska; Mary (Sandstede) Green, husband David Green, and children Zachariah, Abel, Joshua, and Luke, of Stillwater; Lee Sandstede, wife Wendy (Stuermann) Sandstede, and children Megan, Nathan, Jonathan, and Ryan of Poulsbo, Wash.; Evan Sandstede, wife Julie (Tarnowski) Sandstede, and children Jacob, Grace, and Jonathan of Hibbing; and Eric Sandstede, wife Pamela (Rentoul) Sandstede of Dassel; sister-in-law Josie (Ward) Martens of Hutchinson; her special nephew, Paul Martens of Minneapolis; and many other nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.

Arrangements were made by Fairbanks Funeral Home and Crematory in Alaska.
