Fern Mattson

Fern Constance (Carlen) Mattson, age 83, of Buffalo, formerly of Cokato, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2007 at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids.

Funeral service is today, Nov. 5, at 11 a.m. at Buffalo Covenant Church, with the Rev. Brett Schmidt officiating. Music will be provided by Norma Geoffrion, Mitch Mattson and Phil Benson. Interment is at Albion Free Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation was Sunday, Nov. 4 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Swanson Peterson Funeral Home in Cokato, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., and will continue today for one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.

Casket bearers are Mathew Mattson, Mitchel Mattson, Camille Mattson, Jennifer Bartos, Randy Bartos, Jason Soch, Alyson Kraus, and Amanda Krause.

Honorary bearers are Mel and Shirley Sodergren, Joyce and Robert Gilbert, John and Marie Wright, and George and Doris Kotila.

Arrangements are by the Swanson Peterson Funeral Home in Cokato.

Fern was born Sept. 9, 1924 to Rudolph and Ida Carlen in Cokato Township. She was baptized and confirmed at Knapp Lutheran Church.

She graduated from Cokato High School with the class of 1942, and then went on to attend St. Andrews Nursing School in Minneapolis, enrolling in the nurses cadet program in 1944.

Fern worked as a registered nurse in the Cokato and Buffalo hospitals, before becoming Annandale’s school nurse.

She married Edward Mattson of Cokato at Knapp Lutheran Church in 1945. They made their home on a farm south of Annandale at West Albion for 40 years. They have lived in Buffalo for the last 12 years.

Fern was a member of the Buffalo Evangelical Covenant Church. Over the years, she volunteered for many church and community organizations. Serving others was her greatest joy.

Her many interests included enjoying her grandchildren, visiting her children, entertaining her friends, and going camping and fishing with her husband, Ed. Fern and Ed loved to travel, and have made many friends in Texas, California, and Sweden.

Fern also enjoyed her monthly luncheons with her retired Buffalo nursing friends.

She is survived by her loving husband, Ed, of Buffalo; daughters Connie (Fred) Soch of Waubun, Minn., and Annette (Jeff Reardon) Mattson of Portland, Ore.; son DuWayne (Jeanne) Mattson of Fairhaven, Minn.; grandchildren Jennifer (Randy) Bartos of Waubun, Jason (Beth) Soch of Swarthmore, Pa., Mathew (Camille) Mattson of Rogers, Mitchel (Jessica Holman) Mattson of Philadelphia, Pa., and Alyson Kraus and Amanda Kraus, both of Portland, Ore.; great-grandchildren Melissa, Molly, and Mason Bartos, and Zofia and Hayden Soch; and a sister, Gloria Hempel of Annandale.

Fern was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, June Olson; and brothers, Alden and Paul Carlen.

Memorials are preferred to Buffalo Covenant Church building fund, Albion Free Church, or North Crow River Lutheran Church of Knapp.
