Beatrice Mercedes McCarty
Beatrice Mercedes McCarty, age 86, of Dassel, formerly of Robbinsdale, died Thursday, June 7, 2007 at the Dassel Lakeside Community Home.
She was born Oct. 28, 1920 in Minneapolis, the daughter of Fredrick and Myrtle (Sorenson) Smith. She grew up in Minneapolis and attended Minneapolis North High School for her education.
Beatrice was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith and was presently a member of the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Dassel.
She was united in marriage to Robert V. McCarty July 4, 1942 at St. Bridget’s in north Minneapolis. They made their home Robbinsdale, where they raised their five children.
Beatrice worked as a surgical secretary, and later worked as a cook at the Merwin Drug Store in Robbinsdale.
During the summer, the family moved to Dassel and lived on Long Lake in Dassel, where they built a cabin that they enjoyed during the summers for many years.
When Robert and Beatrice retired, they moved to Dassel, where they turned their cabin into their retirement home. Beatrice lived by the lake for a few years following Robert’s death, before she moved to an apartment in Dassel.
Beatrice was an active person and enjoyed taking care of people. She was a wonderful cook who could make anything; a gifted cake decorator and oil painter, and loved to knit.
In her younger years, Beatrice enjoyed waterskiing, bowling, and fishing. She even had an electric golf cart that had been beefed up and legalized so she could take it into town to run her errands. Beatrice especially enjoyed the Dassel Red Rooster Days and the Cokato Corn Carnival, attending every one.
Beatrice is survived by her children, Robert McCarty of Loretto, Barbara Follmer of Andover, Judy (Michael) Foss of Brooklyn Park, Michael McCarty of Crystal, and Patrick McCarty of Watertown; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Paul (Karen) Smith of Minnetonka.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jan. 26, 1997; her parents; three brothers, Raymond, Fredrick, and Milton; and one sister, Vivian, in infancy.
