Mary McRaith

Mary Carrigan McRaith, age 95, of Winsted, died Saturday, May 26, 2007 at St. Mary’s Care Center in Winsted.

She was born November 20, 1911 in Ellsworth Township, north of Hutchinson, the daughter of John and Gertrude (O’Fallon) Carrigan.

Mary Therese was baptized and confirmed in her faith at St. Anastasia Catholic Church in Hutchinson. In June of 1938, she married Michael McRaith, the boy next door.  After their marriage, they settled on a farm near Montrose. Mike and Mary moved to Winsted in 1952, primarily to provide a Catholic education for their children at Holy Trinity Schools.  They were faithful members of Holy Trinity parish.

After raising her family, Mary spent twelve fulfilling years working as a nurse’s aide at St. Mary’s Care Center. She was loved and appreciated by the residents and the staff.

Many friends and relatives who experienced Mary’s warm hospitality in her home, also benefited from her extraordinary talent for cooking and baking.Mary loved life and loved people.  She will always be remembered by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends as a generous, spirited, fun, loving person.

She is survived by five children, Jerry McRaith of Waverly, and his five children: Elizabeth McRaith-Hassett, John McRaith, Maggie (Dan) McCarty, Maureen McRaith (Kiyoshi Nakasaka) and Michele McRaith (Justin McCarthy); Bernie (Mary) McRaith of Hutchinson and their eight children: Colleen (Les) Johnson, Mary Pat McRaith, Sarah (Eric) Dieckman, Brigid (Andy) Laske, Amy (Wayne) Nodsle, Kevin (Heidi) McRaith, Barry (Kim) McRaith and Nora (Kerry) McGrain; Sister Mary Ellen McRaith, OSF of Winsted, Patricia Miles of Scottsdale, Arizona and Rita (Curt) Butterfield of Bothell, Washington and their daughter Molly Butterfield;  nineteen great grandchildren; many special nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Michael McRaith;  infant son, Joseph; parents, John and Gertrude Carrigan; a brother, Jerome Carrigan, and his wife Mildred; and two sisters, Genevieve Wells and her husband Walter, Kathleen Serati and her husband Paul.

A visitation took place at The Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted Tuesday, May 29, 4-8:30 p.m.  A prayer service took place at 7:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Mary McRaith took place Wednesday, May 30, at 10:30 a.m., at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted.  Father Paul L. Wolf and Father Eugene Brown were concelebrants.

Interment was at St. Anastasia Cemetery in Hutchinson, Wednesday, May 30 at 2:00 p.m.

Readers for the Mass were Michele McRaith, Elizabeth McRaith-Hassett and Amy Nodsle.

Gift bearers were Molly Butterfield, Nora McGrain and Maureen McRaith.

Casket bearers were Brigid Laske, Sarah Dieckman, Barry McRaith, John McRaith, Kevin McRaith and Mary Pat McRaith.

The casket bearers, readers, gift bearers, and soloist were grandchildren of Mary.

The organist for the Mass was Alice Nowak, with special music by Maggie McCarty.

The Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted served the family.
