Sarah “Sally” G. Melichar
Sarah “Sally” G. Melichar, age 89 of Cologne, passed away peacefully with family at her side June 3, 2007 at the Waconia Good Samaritan Center.
Sarah Grace was born December 31, 1917 in West Township of Montgomery County Iowa, the daughter of Alfred and Addie (Kellenbarger) Cooper. Sarah was baptized and confirmed at Champion Hill Presbyterian Church in Emerson, Iowa. She married Harry Melichar November 11, 1941 in Minneapolis.
Sarah spent her childhood in Southwest Iowa, graduating from Red Oak High School. She attended cosmetology school in eastern Iowa, and worked briefly before her marriage. She and her husband lived in Nebraska, Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota, while he did defense work and post-war construction.
They realized their dream and settled on a small farm west of the Twin Cities in 1950, sharing 40 years, working together on the farm with cattle, chickens, and a few pigs. She took great pride in her garden, sharing the bountiful harvest with friends and neighbors.
After Harry’s passing, she continued living on the farm until entering Waconia Good Samaritan Center in May.
Sarah was a caring, loving and devoted wife and mother who showed compassion, and provided comfort and solace for the joys and concerns of others, always putting others before herself. She positively touched the lives of her family and friends with her wisdom, love and generosity. She treasured the beauty and tranquility of rural life, and the door to her home was always open, with coffee and homemade cookies to share with all who visited. Family and friends will keep those memories close to their hearts always.
Sarah was preceded in death by her husband Harry; parents Alfred and Addie Cooper; sisters and brothers Wilma, Florence, Ward, Chester, Glen, Harold and two siblings in infancy, Lucille and Walter.
She is survived by her loving family, daughter Suzanne G. “Suzie” Melichar of Mayer; sister-in-law Marjorie Cooper of Red Oak, Iowa; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Louis and Adeline Melichar of Mayer; as well as many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.
