Frances Elizabeth Motzko
Frances Elizabeth Motzko, age 91, of Delano, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007.
She was born July 7, 1915, in Grenville, S.D. A story handed down is that Frances almost died at birth if it were not for a midwife, Frances Walsik. The parents, Otto and Ottilla, were so grateful, they named Frances after her.
Frances was the last surviving sibling, the second youngest from a large family of 14. Her favorite was her sister, Helen, who passed away Dec. 28, 1998. They lived and worked together as nursing assistants when they were teenagers.
Frances met Charles Peter Motzko of Delano July 4, 1935, on a trip to visit relatives. They continued a long distance relationship, which led to marriage Jan. 7, 1936, at St. Joseph’s Church in Grenville, S.D.
Charles and Frances made their home in Delano at a residence above the store that Charles ran with his dad, Charles Sr. It was there that they raised three girls and three boys, Fran, Gloria, Dee, Chuck, Stan, and John, over a span of 15 years, all helping run the store.
Frances was involved with St. Joseph’s Church in Delano, serving as a member of the Rosary Society and the Ladies Guild. Her biggest contribution was being chairperson of the Fall Festival Turkey Dinner for over 30 years.
Frances was also known for her large flower gardens, which continued right up to the present.
Charlie and Frances were married over 51 years when Charlie died July 9, 1987. Through her faith in God, Frances then lived on her own with the support of family and friends.
In the latter years, Frances and Irene Gnitka were like twin sisters, going to church Saturday night and then eating out afterwards. Frances loved to go on family vacations to the North Shore, on trips to Iowa and South Dakota, with stops along the way at the casinos to try her luck.
Frances went through knee surgery, living with a pacemaker, diabetes, gout, and finally suffered a stroke Nov. 16, 2006. In the hospital, and then the nursing home, she was known as a sweetie, with always a smile on her face. More than one nurse or attendant commented on Frances’s pleasant personality.
She is survived by her children, Frances (Richard) Graunke, Gloria (Art) Schoening, Delores Kosek, Charles (Linda) Motzko, Stan (Margaret) Motzko, and John Motzko; grandchildren Doug, Steve, Dave, Debbie, Chris, Bill, Susan, Mike, Mark, Mary, Bryan, Brenda, Mary Ann, Chaz, Megan, Nathan, Addie, Taylor, and Rain; great-grandchildren; and many relatives and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial was Wednesday, Jan. 31 at 11 am. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Delano, followed by interment in the church cemetery.
