Clifton Victor “Cliff” Nelson

Clifton Victor “Cliff” Nelson, age 89, of Buffalo, formerly of Howard Lake, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2007 at the St. Cloud Hospital.

He was born May 20, 1917 in Lyndale, the son of Fred A. and Martha L. Hanthorn Nelson.

Clifton was joined in holy marriage with Eleanor C. Broll March 22, 1939, in Hudson, Wis. God blessed their marriage with five children: Mary Ann, Kathleen, Betty, Joyce, and Rick.

Cliff and Eleanor engaged in farming for many years west of Howard Lake on Highway 12. In later years, Cliff worked at Delano Granite Works.

He loved to go fishing, and fish fries were a family tradition.

Cliff is survived by his children: Mary Ann (Jeff) Gaskell of The Villages, Fla., Kathleen (Don) Babatz of Montrose, Joyce Nelson of Fitchburg, Wis., and Rick Nelson of Littleton, Colo.; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, two step great-grandchildren; three step great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Pearl Runyan of Minneapolis; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Gladys Nelson, Dee (Jerry) Hance, Veronica Herkenhoff, and Dolores Broll; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor, Dec. 6, 1996; a daughter, Betty Smith; son-in-law Mike Smith; a grandson, Mark Babatz; granddaughter Molly Kraus; his parents; four brothers, Curtis, Adrian, Harold, and Charles “Charlie” Nelson; two sisters, Harriet and Beulah; and a sister-in-law and brothers-in-law, Nellie Nelson, Walter Herkenhoff, Myron Broll, Bill Wilhite, and Earl Runyan.

A Mass of Christian Burial took place Saturday, Feb. 10 at 9:30 a.m. at the Church of St. Mary in Waverly. Father Timothy Cloutier was the celebrant. Interment followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Waverly.

Visitation was Friday, Feb. 9 from 4 to 8 p.m. at The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.; and continued Saturday at the church, one hour prior to the Mass.

Casket bearers were Kevin Smith, Jacob Kraus, Alan Babatz, Scott Gaskell, Eric Gaskell, and Todd Gaskell.

The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo served the family.
