Robert “Bob” Duwayne Nelson
Robert “Bob” Duwayne Nelson, age 73, of Cokato, died Monday, June 18, 2007 at home, surrounded by his family.
He was born July 28, 1933 in Minneapolis to Nels and Florence (Kath) Nelson. Bob’s family moved from Minneapolis to farm around Wendell, Campbell, and Tenney, Minn.
He was baptized Oct. 8, 1933 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Campbell, Minn., and confirmed at the same church May 9, 1948.
Bob met Darlene Medenwaldt when his family had a farm about four miles from her family. They were married Jan. 18, 1953.
Bob and Darlene farmed until 1955, and moved to Wheaton, Minn. In 1963, they moved to Hankinson, N.D. The family then made Cokato their home, moving there in April of 1966, when Bob began working at Mattson Building and Supply.
He decided to start his own business doing roof coating in 1978, which later included shingling and carpentry. His sons, Kevin and Kelvin came on as employees. In 1984, Bob suffered a heart attack, which ended his career in construction.
Bob was an active member of Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cokato.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, being out at the family trailer on Lake Stella, and playing cards.
Bob also enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was a grandpa who didn’t miss many of his grandchildren’s activities, attending everything from ball games, athletic events, and music concerts, to church activities.
Bob is survived by his wife, Darlene of Cokato; sons, Kevin (Kris) of Darwin, Kim Roy (Wendy) of Tennessee, Kelvin (Wendy) of Cokato, and Ken (Heidi) of Willmar; daughters, Kristie (John) Martinson of Cokato, and Karla (Ryan) Zieman of Hutchinson; 15 grandchildren, Jenny (Jon) Lee, Jessie (Josh) Holly, Bo and Caleb Nelson, Leah, Amy and Erik Martinson; Rachel, Alyssa, Sarah, Reid and Drew Nelson; Ray and Anita Nelson; and Jacob Zieman; and four great-grandchildren, Katelyn and Kezia Lee, Emily Holly, and Kya Nelson.
He is further survived by a brother, Clarence (Pat) Nelson; and sisters, Lois (Doc) Fielde, Janice (Jay) Bapp, and Carol Nelson.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Vernon Nelson.
Funeral service was Friday, June 22 at 11 a.m. at Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cokato with the Revs. Steve Thorson and Wally Glucklich officiating. Music was provided by Karen Anderson and Win Brand. Interment was in Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Cokato.
Bob’s 15 grandchildren were his casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers were Dennis Johnson and Tom Keaveny.
Visitation took place Thursday, June 21 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home in Cokato, and continued Friday for one hour prior to the service at the church.
