Luella Corrine Nystrom

Luella Corrine Nystrom, age 74, of Delano, died Friday, Sept. 7, 2007, in Pensacola, Fla. at West Florida Hospital’s Covenant Hospice facility after a long illness.

She was born June 21, 1933 in Ashland, Wis. to Paul Broten, Sr. and Manghild (Halvorsen) Broten.

Luella graduated from Ondossagon High School in Washburn, Wis. in 1951. She received her bachelor’s degree from Northland College in Ashland in 1956.

Luella was married to Herbert William Nystrom, Jr. of Mason, Wis. in 1956.

She worked at the University of Minnesota after graduating from college, and later was a school teacher for Atwater High School and Plymouth Jr. High School in Minnesota. She also worked in the insurance backroom operations industry for several years.

An entrepreneur, Luella started and ran several businesses in Delano with her husband beginning in the 1960s and until her death.

She enjoyed traveling, and visited 21 countries in Europe, three Scandinavian countries, Tahiti, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Mexico, Hawaii, and Jamaica.

Luella also enjoyed studying history and human anthropology, participating in an archeological dig from the Roman era in Germany. In 1991, she co-authored a published article on the topic of bureaucracy in prehistory related to these studies in the Journal of Comparative Public Administration.

A lifelong animal lover, Luella adopted several small dogs. She will be missed dearly by her latest little buddy, Freddy, her 10-year-old poodle.

Luella took great pride in her family, especially her four grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, and love of her life, Herbert William Nystrom, Jr. of Delano; sons, Scott V. Nystrom (wife Sharon) of Gaithersburg, Md., and Herbert Gregory Nystrom (wife Lynn) of Royalston, Mass.; grandchildren, Samantha Nystrom, Stuart Nystrom, Spencer Nystrom, and Brent Nystrom; sisters Genevieve Malinsky of Jefferson, Wis., Vivian Magalske of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Carol (Susie) Cameron of Bartlett, Ill.; and brother Paul Broten, Jr. of Gig Harbor, Wash..

Luella was preceded in death by a brother, Myron (Sim) Broten; and a sister, Arlene (Tootsie) Wickman.

Interment took place Wednesday, Sept. 12 at Lakewood Memorial Cemetery in Minneapolis.

Memorial donations may be made to Covenant Hospice, 5041 N. 12th Avenue, Pensacola, FL 32504.

Arrangements were by the Iten Funeral Home of Delano.
