Thomas Duane O’Fallon

Thomas Duane O’Fallon, age 80, of Grand Rapids, died Friday, May 4, 2007, at the Evergreen Terrace in Grand Rapids.

Thomas was born Sept. 21, 1926, the second of five sons born to Gerald O’Fallon and Gertrude Kisling. He grew up in Dassel, and graduated from Dassel High School.

Thomas served in the US Navy in the Pacific and upon discharge, briefly attended the University of Minnesota. There, he met and married Marlys Peterson in 1948.

He was employed in the human resource department for Donaldsons department store in both Minneapolis and Rochester, and for Magnetic Controls in St. Louis Park.

In 1963, O’Fallon, along with his partner, Ed Wortman, moved his family to Hill City to build Quadna Mountain Lodge and develop a year-round resort. During his tenure, the resort added a golf course, condominiums, indoor tennis, and other amenities.

After the death of his wife, Marlys, in 1989, Thomas moved to Florida, where he lived until shortly before his death.

He is survived by his brothers, John (Rose) O’Fallon of Annandale, and Gerald O’Fallon of Mesa, Ariz.; his children, Diane and Ron Shaefer of Glen Carbon, Ill., Tom and Pat O’Fallon of Huntsville, Ala., Peter O’Fallon, Debra and Mark McBride, all of Grand Rapids, Steve and Barb O’Fallon of Gilbert, Ariz., David and Sandy O’Fallon of Grand Rapids, Mary and Steve Mohs of Savage, Ann and Tim Shimeall of Maplewood, and Paul and Jacquie O’Fallon of Lano Lakes; and 15 grandchildren, Teresa, Tom, Tim, Michael, Brian, Sean, Kelly, Ryan, Matt, Haley, Michaela, Jordan, Lindsey, Andrew, and Quincy.

In addition to his wife, Marlys, Thomas was preceded in death by his mother, Gertrude, in 1969; father, Gerald, in 1984; and two brothers, Robert and Richard.

A Mass of Christian Burial took place Friday, May 11 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Darwin with Father Patrick Casey officiating. Interment was at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.

Arrangements were by the Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel.
