Arthur Lawrence O’Neil obituary, 8/3/07


Arthur Lawrence O’Neil, age 81, of Rochester, Minn., former superintendent of schools in Lester Prairie, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2007 at Seasons Hospice in Rochester, following a long battle with cancer.
Arthur was born Oct. 2, 1925 and was raised in Rochester.
He served in the US Navy in World War II and deployed to Japan on the Battleship Iowa.
After furthering his education at Winona State and the University of Minnesota, Arthur was employed as a teacher in Ellendale and Plainview. He then served as principal in Delevan, Spring Valley, and Sauk Centre, and as superintendent of schools in Lester Prairie.
In 1954, Arthur married Rosemary Barbara Vaux.
During his lifetime, he was a member of the Lester Prairie American Legion, the Rochester Knights of Columbus, and the Minnesota Retired Educators Association.
For 14 years, he was an active resident of the Reallife Cooperative in Rochester. His greatest joy was spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Arthur was preceded in death by three brothers, Ed, Gerald, and Leo; and a sister, Mary.
He is survived by his wife, Rosemary; two daughters, Dr. Michele Hanson (Dr. Gregory Hanson) of Rochester, and Dr. Angela O’Neil; two sons, Daniel Arthur O’Neil (Amy) of Rochester, and Barry O’Neil (Mary) of Inver Grove Heights; 12 grandchildren, Jay, Tess, Kate, Keaton, Parker, Brady, Maria, Darby, Larisa, Logan, Nicole and Landon; and a brother, Clarence.
Funeral service was Wednesday, Aug. 8 at 10:30 a.m. at Pax Christi Church in Rochester.
Visitation was Tuesday, Aug. 7 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Macken Funeral Homes in Rochester and continued for one hour preceding the service Wednesday.
