Jerome “Joe” Orlin Ostgulen, age 80, of Howard Lake, died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2007 at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
He was born Oct. 23, 1927, in Terrace, Minn. to Oscar and Minnie (Johnson) Ostgulen. Joe was baptized and confirmed at Chippewa Falls Lutheran Church in Terrace.
He graduated from Brooten High School with the class of 1945.
Joe was united in marriage to Ardella Werts March 19, 1949. Joe and Ardella moved to Howard Lake in 1957, where Joe worked as a lineman for Northern States Power, until his retirement in 1987.
Active in the Masonic Lodge, Elks, and Lions Club, Joe also held various church offices.
He was a member of the Howard Lake Fire Department for 30 years, serving as chief for 17 years.
Joe was also a Boy Scout leader, member of the Howard Lake City Council and Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted School Board, and a volunteer driver for Wright County.
Joe is remembered for his love and devotion to his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. They were, and always will be, his greatest loves.
Joe cherished his many friends and always offered his helping hand.
He is survived by his wife, Ardella; sons, Rickey Ostgulen of Austin, Minn., Terry (Larae) Ostgulen of Howard Lake, and Rory (JoAnn) Ostgulen of Lake City, Minn.; grandchildren Jil (Jason) Slegh, Angela (Justin) Gabbert, Trisha Ostgulen, Sara (Justin) Niesen, Amanda (Andy) Meyer, Amy Ostgulen, and Tony Ostgulen; nine great-grandchildren; and sisters, Violet Jennum, Marion Hagen, Naomi (Bud) Melzer, and Ruth Helgeson.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Minnie Ostgulen; and great-grandsons Brandon and Dylan Gabbert.
Funeral services took place Saturday, Nov. 17 at 3 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Howard Lake with the Rev. Joel Swedberg officiating. Music was provided by Grant Judd and Joe’s great-grandchildren.
Visitation was Friday, Nov. 16 from 5 to 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Swanson Peterson Funeral Home in Howard Lake, and continued Saturday for one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.
Casket bearers were Joe’s grandchildren: Jil Slegh, Angela Gabbert, Trisha Ostgulen, Sara Niesen, Amanda Meyer, Amy Ostgulen, and Tony Ostgulen.
Honorary casket bearers were his great-grandchildren: Rylie Slegh, Morgan Niesen, Abby Niesen, Taylor Gabbert, Shelby Gabbert, Brooke Gabbert, Gracie Gabbert, Trent Meyer, and Braydon Meyer.
Arrangements were by the Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home in Howard Lake.
