Eleanor O. Sandstede obituary, 8/22/07


Eleanor O. Sandstede, age 92, of Dassel, died Monday, Aug. 20, 2007, at the Lakeside Community Home in Dassel.
She was born June 1, 1915 in Luverne, Minn., the daughter of John E. and Tilda (Jacobsen). Eleanor grew up in the Luverne area, where she was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She graduated from the Luverne High School in 1933, and later returned and directed its choir.
Eleanor was united in marriage to Frank Sandstede Feb. 5, 1938, at the Lutheran church in Luverne. Together, they made their home on a farm near Beaver Creek until 1948.
In 1950, they moved to Dassel after Frank took a job as an implement salesman for New Idea Farm Equipment. In 1966, Eleanor moved to Ellsworth Township, where she had resided until February 2006.
Eleanor was employed at the Dassel Bake Shop for David Backes from 1963 until 1967. In 1967, she went to work for 3M in Hutchinson, where she worked until she retired in 1985.
She loved to take care of her family and deeply enjoyed her children and grandchildren. Eleanor was a skilled pianist, playing for the Ladies Aid meetings, and even had played with a ragtime band when she was younger.
She was a member of the choir at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Dassel for over 30 years.
Eleanor enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening, and canning the vegetables that she grew. She will be deeply missed by both family and friends
She is survived by her children, Robert (Janet) Sandstede, John (Sue) Sandstede, all of Dassel, Neal Sandstede of Denver, Colo.; and Georgia (Don) Rettman of Darwin; 19 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, Jan. 5, 1965; her parents; brothers Leon, Herman, and Melvin; and two infant sisters.
The funeral service took place Thursday, Aug. 23 at 11 a.m. at the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Dassel with the Rev. Steven Olson officiating. Music included hymns “How Great Thou Art,” “Precious Lord Take My Hand,” “God Be With You,” and a choral ensemble, “Ready Lord.” Soloist Sheldon Hedin sang “In the Garden.” Organist was Floriine Osness. Interment was at the Dassel Cemetery.
Visitation took place Wednesday evening, Aug. 22 at the Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel from 5 to 8 p.m., and continued for one hour Thursday, prior to the service at the church.
Casketbearers were Evan Sandstede, Eric Sandstede, Kathryn Sandstede, Jennifer Sandstede, Angela Haiden, David Rettman, Jill Wedel, and Chris Smith.
The Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel handled the arrangements.
