Wilbert J. “Bert” Schmieg

Wilbert J. “Bert” Schmieg, age 74, of Victoria, died Friday Aug. 3, 2007 at his home.

He was born April 19, 1933 at Laketown Township, Carver County, the son of Alphonse R. and Margaret (Reus) Schmieg.

Wilbert was a professional carpenter during his lifetime. He was a member of Waconia American Legion Post 150, and Waconia VFW 5462.

He served as a volunteer fireman with the Victoria Fire Department for many years.

Wilbert enjoyed polka music, traveling to Las Vegas, collecting model cars, and visiting with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Carolyn; children and spouses, Brian and Robin Schmieg of Victoria, Randy Schmieg of Centerville, Kristine and David Edwards of Rochester, Kelly and Pete Holzer of Jordan, Maureen and Matt Thompson of Mound, and Angela Schmieg of Mound; and grandchildren, Sarah, Kyle, Megan, Cassie, Kellie, Delany, Clayton, Sunny, Ruby, and Brekken.

Wilbert is further survived by brother and sisters-in-law, Leon and Donna Schmieg of Waconia, and Jeanie Schmieg of Jordan; sisters and brothers-in-law, Eileen and Arnie Moe of Glenwood, Linda and Wayne Plekkenpol of Aitkin, and Jack Stein of Mound; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Arie Visser of Mound, Arlene and Tom Reiger of Arizona, Corinne and John Bodin of Georgia, Harry and Yvonne Visser of Maple Plain, Arlette and Arnold Murto of Maple Grove, and Barney Visser of Hutchinson; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Wilbert was preceded in death by his daughter, Leslie Ann Schmieg; parents, Alphonse and Margaret Schmieg; brothers Allen and Bernie Schmieg; and sister Mary Jane Stein.

Mass of Christian Burial took place Tuesday, Aug. 7 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Victoria Catholic Church in Victoria with Father Bob White as celebrant. Interment was at St. Victoria Catholic Cemetery.

Casket bearers were Dave Edwards, Pete Holzer, Matt Thompson, Kyle Schmieg, Kevin Schmieg, and Mark Stein.

Arrangements were with the Johnson Funeral Home of Waconia.
