Mildred Florence Schmieg obituary, 9/21/07


Mildred Florence Schmieg, age 87, of Howard Lake, died Friday, Sept. 21, 2007 at the Howard Lake Good Samaritan Care Center.
She was born April 9, 1920 in Howard Lake, the daughter of Herman and Martha (Streich) Reek. A lifelong member of St. James Lutheran Church, Howard Lake, she was baptized May 9, 1920 by the Rev. A. L. Oeten, and confirmed in her faith April 9, 1933 by the Rev. C. G. Seltz.
Miildred was married to Clifford Schmieg Oct. 12, 1940 at St. James Lutheran Church with the Rev. E. N. Seltz officiating. This marriage was blessed with four children.
They made their home and living on Mildred’s family’s farm southwest of Howard Lake.
Mildred enjoyed gardening and raising her family. After 75 years of living on her childhood farm in Victor Township, she moved into town to be closer to family and friends. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Martha Reek; and by her husband, Clifford.
She is survived by her children, Roger (Patricia) of Shakopee, Wayne (Denise) of New Hope, Joel (fiancée Sue) of Houston, Texas, and Jan (Dick) Sawatzke of Waverly; and grandchildren, Jeff (Laura) Schmieg of St. Louis Park, Scott (Tammy) Schmieg of Minneapolis, Jessica (Walt) Skaggs of Temple, Texas, Missy Schmieg (fiancé Duncan Hunter) of Houston, Texas, Tammy Sawatzke (fiancé John Anderson) of St. Cloud, and Eric Sawatzke of Waverly.
Mildred is further survived by great-grandchildren, Jonah and Eliza Schmieg, Ruth and Sam Schmieg, and Samantha Skaggs; special friends Becky Schmieg and Linda Schmieg; nieces; nephews; and a host of family and friends.
The funeral service was Wednesday, Sept. 26 at St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake with the Revs. Michael Nirva and Martin Schoenfeld officiating. Organist was Nancy Butterfass, and special music was provided by the ladies of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. Interment was in the Howard Lake Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Mildred’s grandchildren, Jeff Schmieg, Scott Schmieg, Jessie Skaggs, Missy Schmieg, Tammy Sawatzke, and Eric Sawatzke.
Arrangements were by the Swanson Peterson Funeral Home in Howard Lake.
