Helen Marie Schmierbach

Helen Marie (Henningson) Schmierbach, age 93, of Cokato, died Monday, May 28, 2007 at the Cokato Manor.

Helen was born in West Branch, Iowa April 15, 1924 to Chris and Bothilde Henningson. She was baptized May 17, 1914 by her grandfather, Nels Clemmensen, a Lutheran pastor. Helen was confirmed April 21, 1935 at Eidskog Lutheran Church, near Ortonville, Minn., by Pastor J. P. Leland.

She graduated from Ortonville High School in 1930. Helen then went on to one year of Normal Training to become a teacher. She taught in several rural school districts in Big Stone County between 1931 and 1938.

Helen was married to Fred (Fritz) Schmierbach June 1, 1938. The couple lived in the Big Stone County area until 1953, when they moved to western Oregon.

After Fritz passed away in 2000, Helen moved back to Minnesota to be close to family.

Helen’s hobbies included scrapbooking, photography, nature walks, bird watching, gardening, and reading. She spent four years at Cokato Manor, where she made many friends among the staff.

She is survived by a sister, Dorothy Schrey of Plymouth, Wis.; a sister-in-law, Ailys Henningson of Ortonville; a brother-in-law, Herman Schmierbach of Ortonville; many nieces and nephews; grand nieces and nephews; friends; and her “extended family,” the staff at Cokato Manor.

In addition to her husband, Fritz, Helen was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Raymond and Berton Henningson; sisters Florence (Henningson) Haugen and Avis (Henningson) Nelson; four sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; four nephews; and one grand nephew.

A family memorial service took place Friday, June 1 on the farm site of Helen’s childhood home near Ortonville.

Arrangements were by the Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home in Cokato.
