Henry “Hank” Nathaniel Shuneson
Henry “Hank” Nathaniel Shuneson, age 89, of Cokato, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007 at his home.
He was born March 23, 1917 to Olaf and Jennie (Lundberg) Shuneson in Albion Township.
Henry’s mother passed away when he was two weeks old, leaving his father with five children. Henry was cared for by Anton and Maria Lindgren, and their family, by Lake Henry until he was four years of age, at which time he came back home to join his father, two brothers, and two sisters.
Henry attended Granite Lake Country School for eight years. He was confirmed at Albion Evangelical Free Church, where he was a member for many years.
Henry farmed with his father and brothers.
He was united in marriage to June Clausen Sept. 8, 1945 at the First Lutheran Church at Hines, Minn. God blessed their marriage with three children, Gary, Darlene, and Kathy.
Henry and June farmed for three years in Smith Lake before moving back to his home place, “Shuneson Corner,” to continue farming many years.
They moved to Cokato in 1981. After retiring from farming, Hank drove cars for Holt Motors for 15 years.
He enjoyed Ford cars and tractors, going out to eat, “driving his pickup,” following the high school sports teams, participating in corn husking contests, and especially, spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Henry is survived by his wife, June; son, Gary (Judy) of Richfield; daughters, Darlene (Daniel) Wuotila of Dassel, and Kathy (David) Hoyhtya of Cokato; seven grandchildren, Stacy (Doug) Keller of St. Michael, Stephanie Shuneson of Tampa, Fla., David (Laura) Wuotila of Rochester, Duane (Wendy) Wuotila of Grove City, Denise Wuotila of Rochester, Crystal (Bjorn) Bakke of Worthington, and Luke (Lindsay) Hoyhtya of Shakopee; and six great-grandchildren, Mason and Erica Bakke, Nathan Wuotila, Aunnalise Hoyhtya, Alyssa Keller, and Cody Mercado.
He is further survived by a brother-in-law, Manfred Johnson; three nieces; three nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Henry was preceded in death by his mother in 1917; his father in 1964; brothers, David and Arvid; and sisters, Esther Rudquist and Gladys Johnson.
The funeral service was Monday, Jan. 29 at 2 p.m. at Albion Evangelical Free Church in rural Cokato, with the Rev. Philip Geoffrion officiating. Music was provided by Bev Lund and Linda Groos, Philip Benson, and Rod and Marilyn Twitchell. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Visitation took place Sunday, Jan. 28 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Swanson Peterson Funeral Home in Cokato, and continued Monday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Casket bearers were Stacy and Doug Keller, David and Laura Wuotila, Crystal and Bjorn Bakke, Stephanie Shuneson, Duane and Wendy Wuotila, Denise Wuotila, and Luke and Lindsay Hoyhtya.
Honorary casket bearers were Roger and Joan Shuneson, Beverly and Russel Irvin, Sandra and Jerry Hermstead, Carolyn and Beryl Munson, Richard and Diana Shuneson, and Daniel and Virginia Johnson.
Arrangements were by the Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home in Cokato.
