Irene Bertha Marie Zabel
Irene Bertha Marie Zabel age 96, of Delano, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007, at her residence.
She was born Aug., 28, 1910, in Rockford Township, Wright County, the daughter of Edward and Anna Weege Ramthun. Irene was baptized Sept. 25, 1910 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church Crawford Lake.
She was also instructed in the Lutheran Catechism and confirmed in the Christian faith Aug. 24, 1924 at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Delano. Her confirmation memory verse was Matthew 7:13 “Enter ye in at the straight gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat.”
Irene and Edmund L. Zabel were joined in holy marriage Aug. 2, 1933 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church Crawford Lake. God blessed their marriage with three children.
Irene and Edmund engaged in dairy farming in Franklin Township, Wright County.
Irene enjoyed her flowers and raising chickens. Through the years, she sold dressed chickens and eggs.
She was a faithful, long-time member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Montrose, where she taught Sunday school for many years.
Irene is survived by her children, Beverly (Willard) Schuette of Watertown, and Joel (Linda) Zabel of Delano; a son-in-law, Harvey Drusch of Howard Lake; 17 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, “Toots” Foede; and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Edmund L. Zabel in 1990; a daughter, Lorraine Drusch in 2001; her parents; three brothers, Raymond, Henry “Hank,” and Lawrence Ramthun; and two sisters, Edith Hayes and Edna Brabec.
Funeral services were Sunday, Jan. 14 at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Montrose with the Rev. Robert J. Hellmann officiating. Congregational hymns were “Amazing Grace” and “Just as I Am, Without One Plea.” The organist was Eliot Epple, and the choir sang “Good Night, Good Morning.” Interment followed at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery Crawford Lake.
Visitation took place Saturday, Jan. 13 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Peterson Chapel in Buffalo, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.
Honorary casket bearers were: Mark, Matthew, Merlyn, and Daryl Drusch, and Brian and Scott Schuette.
Casket bearers were Michael and Craig Drusch, Ralph and Gail Schuette, Michael Melott, and David Zabel.
The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo served the family.
