Mildred Albertha “Millie” Anderson

Mildred Albertha “Millie” Anderson, age 89, of Dassel, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008, at the Lakeside Health Care Center in Dassel.

She was born Nov. 22, 1918, in Lake Jennie, Minn. to Peter and Alma (Ostlund) Settergren, the ninth of 12 children. Mildred attended School District 5, speaking only Swedish when she first started school. She graduated from Dassel High School.

Mildred married Joseph Benjamin Anderson in May of 1939 at the Lake Jennie Covenant Church. They were blessed with three children: Florence, Leon, and Genevieve.

Mildred and Joseph farmed south of Dassel before buying 80 acres by Spring Lake. They raised dairy cows and turkeys, and did custom baling. After selling their farm in 1961, they built a new house in Dassel.

In 1987, they moved into the Dassel Lakeside Apartments, with Mildred spending the last five years in the Lakeside Community Home.

Mildred worked in Minneapolis as a live-in domestic early in their marriage. She worked as a cook at the Dassel Nursing Home for several years, and did seasonal work at the Cokato Canning factory.

Mildred delighted in entertaining people at home, and loved teaching her junior high girls’ Sunday school class for many years.

She was an active member of the Dassel Evangelical Covenant Church, helping wherever needed. She was also a member of both the Northeast Birthday Club and the Stitch Chatter group, and the 4-H Club benefited greatly by her energetic involvement.

Mildred made many beautiful quilts for family members, often enlisting the aid of her friends to help finish them. In her later years, she enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, or listening to a Twins game on her earphones.

Mildred was proceeded in death by her parents; son Leon; husband Joseph; brothers Melvin, Paul, Robert, Walter, Roy, and Herman; and sisters Alice Sorenson, Hilma Utterberg, and Irene Baumetz.

She is survived by her daughters, Florence Moore (Arthur) of Clear Lake, Wis., and Genevieve Nestler (Kenneth) of Juneau, Alaska; grandchildren Jonathan (Veronica), Jennifer, Nathan (Elizabeth), Timothy (Wendy), and Kristen Moore; Jeffrey (Teresa), Bryan (Rachel), and Mark (Erin) Anderson; and Benjamin, Peter (Alicia), and David Nestler; and great-grandchildren Aleesha and Gracie Anderson, Joseph, Benjamin, and Hannah Anderson, Josiah and Naomi Moore, and Ethan Moore.

Mildred is further survived by a sister, Hazel Carlson; a brother, Harry (Doris) Settergren; sisters-in-law Lorraine Settergren and Inez Settergren; and a brother-in-law, Ted Baumetz.
