Tena Clarice Bengtson, age 98, of Golden Valley, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008, at the Colonial Acres Long Term Care Center in Golden Valley.
She was born Feb. 25, 1909, in Blanchardville, Wis., the daughter of Nelvin and Anna (SaalSaa) Thompson. Tena grew up in Rice Lake, Wis., where she received her education.
When she was 14, Tena left home and moved to Chicago, Ill., where she was employed as a nanny.
Tena was united in marriage to the Rev. John Bengtson Nov. 5, 1931, in Winnetka, Ill. Together, they made their home in Winnetka, Ill.; Warren, Pa.; Albert City, Iowa; and Des Moines, Iowa.
Upon John’s retirement, they moved to St. Paul, and eventually, Kerkhoven, Minn. In 1981, they moved to the Covenant Manor in Golden Valley.
Tena was a wonderful mother and grandmother who always had time for her family. She loved to bake and cook, and enjoyed cleaning her home. She loved entertaining family and friends, and was always a good sport, playing games or just helping her grandchildren with projects.
Tena was active with the church youth, cooked for many years at bible camp, and at the age of 75 years, went waterskiing. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
Tena is survived by her children, Deborah (Edward) Dwyer of Auburn, Maine, Lois (Milton) Christensen of Omaha, Neb., Mary (Curtis) Ruch of Chandler, Ariz., Nony (Sonny) Nelson of Dassel, and Ruth (Philip) Peterson of Baldwin, Wis.; 14 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. John Bengtson; her parents; a brother, Lloyd Thompson; a sister, Verna Jacobson; and a son-in-law, Eddy Lindquist.
A funeral service took place Friday, Feb. 1 at 10 a.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Dassel with the Rev. Keith Carlson officiating. The organist was Janet Latt, and great-granddaughters Emily Hammer, Erin Latt, and Hannah Latt sang. Interment was at the Dassel Cemetery.
A memorial service also took place at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1 at the Covenant Manor Chapel in Golden Valley with the Rev. John Satterberg officiating.
Visitation was from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1 at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Dassel.
Casketbearers were Tena’s grandchildren, Jill Renstrom, Jennifer Hansen, Cindy Visbaris, Carol Liafau, Julie Farsworth, Judy Watson, Terry Ruch, Barb Gopperton, Karen Latt, Cathy Hanson, Susan Lennard, Debbie Graham, Kerstin Hanson, and Suzanne Medina.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel.
