Roy A. Bessel, age 85, of Hancock Township, Belle Plaine, passed away peacefully Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, at his residence.
Roy was born April 12, 1923, in Hancock Twp., Carver County, the son of Paul and Ida (Schultz) Bessel.He was baptized May 13, 1923, and confirmed March 21, 1937, both at St. John Lutheran Church in Belle Plaine by the Rev. P.J. Haupt.
Roy was united in marriage to Virginia M. Thaemert Otto Nov. 29, 1974, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Belle Plaine by the Rev. Eugene Boschee.
He was a loving husband, dad, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Roy had a love for animals and them for him, especially the Canadian Geese. He took great joy and care in tending to his lawn and woods using his favorite toys his skid loader and ‘gator.
At age 50, he married the love of his life, Virginia; confident in taking in Virginia’s five children.
Roy enjoyed listening to old tyme music and just spending time with Virginia.
He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Paul and Ida (Schultz) Bessel; brother William Bessel; sisters and brothers-in-law Violet and Orville Stier, and Florence and Harold Otto; father-in-law and mother-in-law Carl and Mayme Thaemert; and brothers-in-law Kenneth and Howard Thaemert.
Roy is survived by is loving family: wife Virginia; children and spouses Leland and Mary Otto of Waconia, Dennis and Karen Otto of Norwood, DuWayne and Karen Otto of Cologne, Janet and Joe Goor of New Ulm, and Kevin Otto and Dawn Brown of Belle Plaine; son-in-law Jerry Denzer of LeSueur; daughter-in-law Sandy Otto of Glencoe; grandchildren Teresa and Dean Schimek, Brian and Jodi Otto, Ben and Kristin Otto, Patrick Otto and special friend Mary, Chris Denzer and special friend Debbie, Jill Denzer and special friend Will, Nicholas Otto, Alyssa Otto, Amber Brown, Rebecca Otto, Matthew Otto; and eight great-grandchildren.
He is further survived by brother and sister-in-law Warren and Mabel Bessel of Belle Plaine; sisters and brothers-in-law Rose and Joe Madlo of Belle Plaine, and Delores and Ortwin Hafemann of New Germany; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law Jayne and Tom Jennings of Bloomington, Linda Thaemert of Cologne, and Vicky Thaemert of Marshall; nieces, nephew, and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service was Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 11 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Belle Plaine with the Rev. Mark Johnson officiating. Interment was at Oakwood Cemetery in Belle Plaine.
Visitation was Tuesday, Oct. 7 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Waconia, and continued Wednesday for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Casket bearers were grandsons Brian Otto, Chris Denzer, Ben Otto, Patrick Otto, Nicholas Otto, and Matthew Otto.
Honorary casket bearers were granddaughters Teresa Schimek, Jill Denzer, Rebecca Otto, Alyssa Otto, and Amber Brown.
