Laurel George Brandel Obituary – 03/04/08


Laurel George Brandel, age 80, of Cokato, died Tuesday, March 4, 2008, at the Meeker County Memorial Hospital in Litchfield.

He was born April 24, 1927, in New Ulm, to Joseph and Dora (Gleisner) Brandel.

Laurel attended St. George Catholic School and the University of Minnesota Agriculture School.

He served his country in the United States Army from 1946 to 1947.

Laurel was married to Dorothy Walser May 4, 1949, at St. George Catholic Church in New Ulm. The couple farmed in the St. George area until 1963, when they moved to Cokato.

Laurel worked as the Stockholm Township maintenance person for 20 years, retiring in 1992.

He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters.

In his spare time, Laurel enjoyed hunting, fishing and antiquing.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Cokato; children, Ronald (Mary Lou) of Cokato, Julie (Allen) Gutknecht of Buffalo, Janice (Dave) Remiger of Wabasso, Allen (Connie), Dorene (Gordy) Erickson, Dale (Jennifer), all of Cokato, Gary (Maren) of Apple Valley, Randy (Roberta) of Cokato, and Mary (Larry) Justin of New Brighton; 23 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Zita Traurig of Aurora, Colo.; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Laurel was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Norbert, Francis, and Rev. Wilfrid; and sister, Viola Swanson.

A Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday, March 8 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Silver Lake, conducted by Fr. Brian Oestreich. Music was provided by Alice Nowak. Interment was at Stockholm Township Cemetery.

Visitation took place Friday, March 7 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Swanson Peterson Funeral Home in Cokato, and continued Saturday for one hour prior to the Mass at the church.

Casket bearers were Andrew Brandel, Daniel Remiger, Tony Brandel, Mike Brandel, Cory Brandel, and Scott Brandel.

Arrangements were by the Swanson Peterson Funeral Home in Cokato.
