Frank F. “Cully” Carlson

Frank F. “Cully” Carlson, age 86, of Watertown, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008, at the Elim Home in Watertown.

A memorial service will take place today, Monday, Nov. 24, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Watertown with the Rev. Ken DeFor officiating. Interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Frank was born Jan. 15, 1922, in Watertown, the son of William and Julia (Peterson) Carlson.

After enrolling at Augsburg College in 1941 , he enlisted in the US Navy in 1942, serving in WWII as a flight instructor in Pensacola, FL until 1945.

Frank was united in marriage to Barbara A. Pettit March 28, 1944, in Des Moines, Iowa.

He graduated from Minnesota School of Business.

Cully was best known in Watertown as the owner of Cully’s Food Market from 1957 to 1970. After selling the store, he worked for the Watertown School District as business manager, and the Mound School District as business manager until his retirement in 1988.

A charter member of the Watertown Lion’s Club, Cully was also an active member of the Eugene Early Legion Post 121. He was a member of the school board and a long-time member of the Trinity Lutheran Church.

Many local residents entrusted Cully to do their income taxes.

He was an avid golfer and Twins fan, and he will be missed by all.

Frank was preceded in death by his son, Richard “Dick” Carlson.; parents William and Julia Carlson; sisters Viola Anderson, and Blenda Olson; and brothers Evans, Wendell, and Lloyd Carlson.

He is survived by his loving family: wife Barb; children and spouses Victoria Smith and partner David Vanasek of Eden Prairie, Christopher and Pam Carlson of Brooklyn Center, Thomas Carlson of Las Vegas, NV, Frank and Debbie Carlson of Elk River, Kevin and Cindy Carlson of Maplewood, Denise and Matthew Hertzog of Winsted, Patricia Carlson and partner Jack Buss of Hopkins, and Heidi and Scott Frederiksen of Eden Prairie; grandchildren Greg and Shari Smith, Kristin Smith, Tiffany Carlson, Becky, Brian and Jeremy Carlson. Sarah and Andy Carlson, Donny and Justine Carlson, Dylan and Jessi Carlson, Cully and Amy Carlson, Natalie and Tyler Carlson, Thomas and Carly Hertzog, Ashley Schuler, Taryn, Timmy and Teddy Frederiksen; and great-grandchildren Bryce, Brady, Claire, Lydia, Elena, Lilian, Maggie and Owen.

Cully is further survived by sisters-in-law LaVerne Carlson of Watertown, Virginia Good of Grand Island, NE; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.
