Oswald C. Gatz, age 95, of Watertown, was called to his eternal home Sunday, June 22, 2008, at the Elim Home in Watertown.
He was born June 23, 1912, in Watertown, the son of Gustav and Ida (Strei) Gatz. Oswald was baptized July 14, 1912, by the Rev. Kretzchmar, and confirmed March 28, 1926, by the Rev. Rudolph, both at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Watertown Township.
Oswald was united in marriage to Mabel K. Young June 3, 1938, at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Bongards, Minn. by the Rev. Oppermann.
A loving husband, dad, and grandpa, Oswald was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Watertown Twp., until he helped establish St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and School. He held different offices while working for the school and the church.
Oswald and Mabel bought the Gatz homestead farm in 1946, where Oswald enjoyed farming for 32 years. He also ran an oil business for a few years, and moved into Watertown.
Oswald was employed near Wayzata and Long Lake as a custodial engineer for 17-and-one-half years, which he also greatly enjoyed.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel; granddaughter Cara Lynn Gendron; parents Gustav and Ida Gatz; and brothers Oscar and William “Bill” and Harold Gatz.
Oswald is survived by his loving family: daughter and son-in-law Sandra and Harry Schlueter of Watertown; granddaughters Michelle and James Anderson of Phoenix, Ariz., and Melissa Gendron of Hopkins; sister-in-law Emma Young of Watertown; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service took place Wednesday June 25 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Watertown, with visitation for one hour prior to the service at the church. The Rev. Paul Krentz officiated at the service. Interment was at the Watertown Public Cemetery.
