Joseph A. Hammers, age 70, of Chandler, Ariz., died Saturday, July 19, 2008, at his home.
He was born Dec. 5, 1937, in Dent, Minn., to Henry and Lora (Stolp) Hammers. Joseph grew up in Dent, and graduated from Perham High School.
After graduating, he worked construction for his brother at Hammers Construction, and then managed a gas station in Osseo, Minn.
Joseph entered the US Air Force Dec. 26, 1956, and was honorably discharged Dec. 23, 1960.
He married Bonnie Swendra May 2, 1969, at St. Ignatius Church of Annandale. The couple moved to Phoenix, Ariz. in 1974, where Joe worked as a machinist.
Joe enjoyed hunting and fishing, and he loved the outdoors.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; son Edward and daughter-in-law Megan; grandsons Cain and Aydan; daughter Nicole and granddaughter Jonah, all of Phoenix, Ariz.; sisters Kate (Dick) Eickschen of Perham, Mary Ann (Bernie) Nolz of Mitchell, S.D., and Rose (Jim) Limmer of Perham; brothers Frank Hammers and Don Hammers, both of Perham; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Lora Hammers; and brothers Edward, Robert, and Raymond.
Funeral service was Friday, July 25 at 1 p.m. at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Annandale, with Father Victor Valencia as the celebrant. Interment was at Grace Lutheran Cemetery of French Lake Township.
Casket bearers were Tom Hammers, Jim Hammers, Dan Hammers, Dan Eickschen, Tom Henderson, Greg Hammers, Mike Hammers, and Steve Hammers.
The Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
